Grip question!!

Hey guys, I am new here and I would like some help regarding the C63amg Coupe. I've always had Audis Quattro in my life and I am used to the amazing grip of the 4WD. I am considering now ordering the C63 amg Coupe but I know it only has Rear WD. How are you guys finding the grip so far? Are you having any problems when it is raining or are any of you concened to drive during winter time? Thanks a lot guys, the car looks absolutely amazing!!!

The C63 is a monster and with rwd it will be a handful if not careful in the rain, snow or even the dry.

There is no comparison with AWD which in many/most cases is point and shoot with no drama.

Cheers.

Rony,
welcome to the forum. I also came from a audi and a background of AWD cars (WRX, JeepSRT8, S4) so I never thought a RWD was in my future. In NJ we get some pretty rough winters and i live in an area with plenty of hills.
I ended up picking up my car in Jan right in the middle of a snowy winter. really if you put the right tires on this car and drive normally you should have no issues. Of coarse of its raining you and you mash the gas you are going to have traction issues. but same thing with Qauttro as i was able to slide the s4 sideways many times.
I have had no grip issues in the summer in rain, never stuck going up hills or anything. and in the winter as long as i wanted to i could drive normally. but if you want to brake traction that option is always there

Thanks bgm. That makes me more comfortable as we don't have those harsh winters in London like you guys have in the US. So I should be ok with RWD.

I have a 2006 Audi rs4 as well as the c63s. The grip is surprisingly good once you get rolling. You've just gotta plan your corner exits a little more. Also make sure you've got the right tyres on.

SuperNik, where are you from? Is it the US? In the UK people usually don't change their tyres as the winter is not very cold. Do you feel a difference with winter tyres?

traction

I have had my C63s now for 14 months - in Europe (Belgium and Finland). Also long roadtrips in UK (Wales, East-Anglia) No problems with the traction - really depends on how you drive. However the car does not ever make anythink suprising - tractions and slides are very predictable. I have winter tyres which I use circa 2 months a year - mainly when driving in the alps. Snow covered roads are not problematic, however it is a RWD car, thus normal RWD caution needs to be taken. When driving on icy road, this is more challenging. In closed snow roads, when pushed (snow rally) the car will understeer - however the whole point is then to use gas to get round the turns with some slide. really the car behaves very logically - never does something which comes as a supririse.

This is the problem for most of us in the UK. We just don't get around to changing from summer tyres to winters... well I certainly don't and I only know one person who has ever bothered. My F10 M5 was absolutely useless in poor weather. Even in damp conditions it was hard to drive without activating traction control or lighting up the tyres. Sometimes this was fun, other times annoying. In snow it was laughable despite carrying an extra 150kg of building materials around in the boot!

All this is one major reason why I have ended up cancelling my order for my delayed C63s coupe - summer had gone so I would be better off buying an AWD RS6 instead!.

So true, never seems to be a point of changing tyres since snowfall is basically non-extistent for us I'm eager to see how the car handles with the pilot supersports when it gets really cold and wet but I'll probably be investing in a set of winter tyres just incase, if anything, to see the difference it'll make.

I'm in the uk. I use winter tyres on all my cars when the temperature averages 4 degrees C or lower. It definitely makes a difference.

Winter tyres aren't just about snow. Below a certain temp, summer tyre compounds just don't work.

I had a similar plan for the C63 too. However I had the exact same plan with the M5 and never actually went ahead and got on with it

My C63S runs on Dunlop SportMaxx RT, which I wouldn't say it has sufficient grip. It will slip even on a manhole cover, a patch of water if you just ever so slightly gave a bigger throttle.

I am looking to switch to Michelin PSS, which on my 997 is awesomely good in dry and in wet.

Hope it is not the limitation of 265 tyres. I have little confidence driving the C63S in wet conditions. No offense, but maybe I have to push it to see what will happen.

My c63s came with Dunlops. They're really not good enough for the car. I switched to 275 Michelin PSS and the difference is night and day.
