I have recently changed from the 2015 model to a new 2020 and it is true the pops and bangs have all but disappeared. However it is just run in so I haven’t pushed it fully yet. I also thought the 2015 was OTT with the noises so there doesn’t seem to be a happy compromise. Piping the noise through the speakers is quite subtle so is not as objectionable as I had imagined. Overall a definite step back. I totally agree about the digital screens. They are so limited and prescribed and who actually uses G-meters and Eco screens?! The new gearbox however, is a big step forward especially if you drive the car in traffic as the auto brake and stop/start combination now works fairly seamlessly. I too agree that 9 gears is crazy, especially in manual mode. However, I think I read in the manual that you can hold the downshift paddle and the gearbox will shift to the lowest possible gear which gets around part of the problem but you need to be driving at 100% or you feel like a bit of a prat! I have yet to try this so cannot confirm this feature as fact. The payback is that fuel economy is significantly improved over the 2015 car. Have fun with your car!

Having driveb my 2020 for 2000 miles (1000 slowly like a granny and the last 500 like a maniac) I can attest that the sound is completely neutered. Valves open sounds more deep and gentle grumble, but not how AMG is supposed to be. IMHO, compared to Audi and BMW, the AMG has been heavier and more of a brash muscle car. Now the exhaust note is barely a step above daily commuter. I added the ASR to keep valves open all the time and it is better, and on the racetrack my kids say it is loud, but no comparison to my W204 with secondaries removed.
I am going in for catted DP in a few weeks just for sound, so no retune to minimize warranty issues.

Overall the facelift is easily the better car. It's just sound that the pfl has over the fl. All you need are catted downpipes though and the fl will pop and bang everytime you let off the gas or downshift in sport+ and race mode. It'll be a lot louder too. I had catted dps installed and had the mufflers modified to allow more sound through them and it sounds absolutely insane now, way better than any pfl I've ever heard. The potential is there for the fl, just gotta bring it out with downpipes. I recommend bmc filters as well with the dps.

Yes. even it's not a kick down, the transmission will still adjust to it's optimum gear depending on the throuttle input.

Just saying in Manual mode it will be a lot of clicks going through gears if not flooring it.
