Increase Load Gradually

I'm still in the break-in period for my new '19 C63s. I noticed that the complete instructions for breaking in the car include keeping engine speed to under 4500 RPM and car speed under 85 MPH for the first 1000 miles. But the instructions also include this: "After 1000 miles, Increase Load Gradually."

From what I've read on forums and seen on YouTube, it seems basically everyone completely ignores this second piece of instruction. Guys cross the 1000 mile mark on the odometer and then immediately try out launch mode over and over.

Did anyone here actually follow the instructions to "increase load gradually?" If so, what did you interpret that instruction to mean?

Waiting for 1000 is hard enough. I usually stomp on it at 1001.

I’m looking forward to trying the launch thingy. Probably shortly after I reach 1000.

Talking 1000 miles in less then 1 week

Bought my girl a 19 c43 , and she clocked in the break-in miles in less than a week... (I think she basically drove around the state to just get the break-in done )

Then it was all ***** out after that.

So basically, no one cares to follow the "increase load slowly" instruction.

Makes sense to me, frankly. 1000 miles is a long time to wait to experience all that these cars have to offer. I'm a week into ownership of my '19 C63s and I've only got 160 mi. Waiting five weeks to try out Sports Mode is really going to try my patience.

Same here. Got mine Saturday. Picked it up and drove it home about 200 miles. One stretch of 6 miles took us 4 hours with a max speed of 6 mph, and then only for about 5 seconds(the book doesn't say anything about driving under a particular speed - Eco Start sure got a workout). Haven't driven it since for various reasons. Otherwise, I don't know that I ever drive 150 miles in a week, so I'll be lagging you.

The second point in the owners manual states to not go over 85mph or 140kph. It is on the sticker in the windshield also I believe. The break in period really is for the longevity of the engine.. I have heard from numerous AMG employees including engine builders that the break in is for longevity and if you improperly break in the car problems occur as a result much later in the cars life around 70k miles +... Once past the 1000 mile break in "enjoy the car." That is a direct quote from the man himself Mike Kubler.. AMG's head engine builder.

Yep, aware of that. Actually read up on the break-in period before picking the car up. After keeping it to under 10mph for more than half of the trip, kept it to 85 or less for the remainder and avoided revving above 4500 rpms.

By 50,000 miles, this car will belong to someone else.

I am taking delivery of my car on the east coast and then driving it to my new home on the west coast. My plan is to baby the car to Denver for the run in period, then let it fly once I'm in the rockies.

One thing I've read is that it isn't ideal to put all your break-in miles on at consistent highway speeds. Ideal break-in conditions are mixed speeds and accelerations, starts/stops, etc. Someone with more engineering and automotive experience can confirm or deny that, and explain why, but I'm just passing on what I've heard. Not like you'll be driving across the country at 35 miles per hour any way.

Enjoy the drive! My dream vacation would be to start out with a new car in Florida and drive it across the US to the Pacific Northwest.

That’s a good point I hadn’t considered. I was planning to get the diff fluid changed when I stop in Denver and may opt to do the oil as well. I will also probably be doing a few hundred miles locally before starting the trip to get ppf and a dash cam installed among other things, so it won’t be like I will be leaving the dealer and jumping on the highway right away either. But yes, really excited to take the car across.

There are theories that go both ways to be honest. Increasing the load gradually after the initial break in couldn't hurt, but it is also not entirely necessary. At this point you should just focus on enjoying your car while making sure it stays within safe operating temperatures, etc. Enjoy in good health!

Talking (Hey Baby) Que Paso - Freddy Fender and a kill story

Yes, waiting can be frustrating. I obeyed the suggestions on my 18C63s until about 1,200 miles, when an M4 on an autobahn in a country that must remain nameless (130kph national speed limits suck) got excited and showed me his speed governor was set for 250kph (~155mph) and I passed him doing a leisurely 260kph (160mph+) while my oblivious lady friend rocked out to Que Paso by the Texas Tornadoes.

The truth is, however, back here in the U.S. (even including the Southwest) it is hard to find places where one can use all these of car's capabilities.
