I own a 2020. The diff fluid gets changed at 2,000 miles. Period.

Hmm. I have a 2020 as well and was told it doesn't need the diff oil change at 2k anymore. Had the car at the dealer a couple times to get something else fixed and they made no mention at those times either. Mine has 7300 miles already, drives great.

i own a 2020 and although dealer was telling me it’s waste of money and not necessary, i did it anyways. i spent 100k on the car, i wasn’t going to cut corners for a few hundred bucks.

Just jumping in here to note that I just brought my C63s in for 1-year Service A, and after I left I was texted to ask about doing this oil change as well. The car has 2,500 miles on it. They say it's required maintenance. It's the first I heard of it. I see it in the owner's manual, but it was NOT on my windshield sticker. The car is leased, and they want to charge me $295 to do this oil change. In addition to $395 for the Service A. They say that if it's not done, the warranty on the lsd will be void. Overall, it seems like nickel and diming...a required additional cost that no one mentioned until now, and they say it voids the warranty on something that will cost a TON more if it fails later. So I'll do it, but I don't like how it was handled by my dealer and by MB in general. Someone mentioned above that the dealership can do it for free and submit it under the warranty. I asked about that and was told "no." I'm in New York, I suppose others may have different results.

I just replaced the Differential Fluid on my new 2020 C63S AMG Coupe that has 2,100 miles on it. I know it was required on my 2014 C63 AMG Coupe and there has been a lot of debate on whether it is required on the W205 platform.

I do all of my own maintenance so I decided to do it anyways, despite what I have read in this post.

The oil that came out was actually really clean and had a minimal amount of clutch material in it. I am glad that I did it just for peace of mind.

The oil that came out of my W204 2014 C63 AMG Coupe at about 2,700 miles was really dirty and had a lot of clutch material in it.

I wouldn't really worry about changing it if you haven't already done so, especially if you have to pay someone to do it.

I'd be careful putting a generic statement overall on the W205 entire platform. The debate as I follow it, centers on the fact that the FL C63 now has a standard electronic LSD, even on non-s versions whereas prior to 2019 this wasn't the case.

But thanks for the post! Glad to hear that it was clean. I'm still on the fence if I should do it or not... still sitting at ~500 miles...

Shouldn't have bought the car if you can't maintain it. Wait until the big bills start to come in.

You can both afford to pay the bills AND be smart about what bills to pay. That's a bit insulting to insinuate that I "can't afford to maintain it"

Great point! Thanks for the additional details. I forgot that the electronic LSD wasn't on all of the W205 platforms

There's no insult here. The insult is you responding to my comment. The price given is definitely within 'normal' pricing. To complain about a service which must be done to remove any shards of metals is ludicrous. You drop a *****load of money on an automobile of this caliber and then complain when the bills come in. I see the same thing with complaints about brake job costs, oil changes, wiper blades, microfilters, tires... One way to reduce costs is to do some of the work yourself. There's more than enough DIY vids for any aspect of maintaining this car.

You have 3 choices:

1. Rag it out and then sell it (and screw over the next owner)
2. Maintain it per specs and enjoy it
3. Don't buy one in the first place (we've seen this happen all too often...)

I hope you haven't mistaken my above comments as "complaints" on maintaining the car. The fact that there is confusion as to if the rear diff needs an oil change or not is not a complaint. If I have to do a rear diff oil change, then I have to do one. But when my SA tells me that I don't because it's now an electronic LSD that doesn't have the same requirements as the older mechanical LSD on the pre FL models, which is contrary to what the service manual says, yeah I question if it's really needed. I was not complaining about pricing. The fact that I saw someone do a $169 rear diff oil change, to me, was a reasonable price to pay for peace of mind, which swayed me off from being "on the fence" if I need to do a rear diff oil change or not...

This being said, just asking to tone down the hostilities. Maybe it's the internet, but reading your comments once again felt like an attack on my capability of maintaining my car. Yes I will clap back at that.

It's not as simple as electronic vs. mechanical. (After all, the electronic LSD still has friction material, only the control is more sophisticated.) My '19 E63S has the electronic LSD but required the break-in oil change. It came with the dash sticker and the dealer did it as part of pre-paid maintenance. Later '19s came without the sticker and didn't require the oil change. Whatever change they made (probably to the composition of the friction packs) came well into production of the electronic LSD. The only way to know for sure is by the windshield sticker.

I don't get 'hostile' about stuff like this. Definitely not for this thread. Some other ones, maybe. However, the way you phrased it: "oh wow... saw the quote of work for $169 to get it changed... I didn't think it was gonna be that cheap... changes my mind now about being on the fence" I read it as... "I didn't think it was gonna be that cheap" and "changes my mind now about being on the fence". Sounded like you were not going to do it. Still aren't.

Now back to your conundrum, the e-diff still uses differential fluid. It still uses gears made of metal. Get the flush. Get a
receipt. Keep the receipt for any future questioning should the worst happen.

Just to add some clarity here. Not sure if people are aware of this, but the differential continues to be a maintenance item requiring regular fluid changes. I forgot what the interval are, but something like every 30k or 40k miles. The only confusion here is around the initial fluid change after the car has barley been driven. Such an early fluid change is normally only necessary if the system was filled with a special break in oil that needs to come out after the break in. BMW M, I believe, still does that with their engines and they need a service right after the break in. I think what's really going on here is that the diff used to come filled with a break in oil, hence the early required fluid change. Otherwise does anybody really think the oil would be that contaminated after 2000 miles, when the rest of the intervals are like 30k-40k miles apart? Another 2000 miles can't make that much of a difference. My car was one which according to AMG Germany no longer requires the initial fluid change. This was confirmed after I spoke to them in Germany during my European Delivery. As said in one of my earlier posts, I still ended up changing the fluid as a piece of mind due to the confusion at the time, but I did it a bit later than recommended because I was on the road the entire time and had to find a dealership in Germany, who can squeeze me in.

Correct, Differential fluid change is due every 30,000 miles.

The service sheet for my 2020 C63S AMG Coupe does not show that it is required at 2,000 miles like my previous W204 2014 C63 AMG Coupe was.

The main difference, I would assume, is the Electronic Differential.

They do not use a break in fluid even if it is due at 2,000 miles.

Scroll up to #23 in this thread. You'll see the original charge of diff oil is totally contaminated with sloughed off friction material by the end of the break-in period. It's not special oil. It's just that the old friction material shed a lot of crap into the oil in the first 2,000 miles and needed to be replaced. A new material obviously avoids that issue.

Not sure why your fluid was so dirty, are you sure that was the fluid out of your car? I know the service advisor told you that but you never know After 2,100 miles on my 2020 C63S AMG Coupe it was really clean and almost looked new. There was a small amount of friction material suspended in the fluid that would drop to the bottom but it was a very minimal amount.

In your post #23 above, you mentioned that the fluid was stinky. It always smells like that even when new.

That wasn't my post. The point is that at some point in 2019 they changed the friction material. Your 2020 had the low-slough material. That post was the earlier, high-slough material that required a break-in oil change.

I suppose this is possible if the friction discs are coated with a thin layer of a different material that wears off very quickly during the initial 2000 miles. Again that would be something to aid the break-in, but otherwise I've never heard of a clutch where the friction material wears much quicker during an initial set of miles and then somehow the wear slows down. It's just a wet multi-plate clutch in there that locks the shafts at various degrees to the diff. The transmission is also full of wet multi-plate clutches, including the start-up clutch and we don't need a transmission oil change after 2000 miles. In retrospect I should have insisted to talk to an engineer at AMG and get a clear explanation of what has changed that no longer requires the initial fluid change.

I am a bit late to the discussion, but I have a 2020 c63s coupe and my 2000 miles is coming up. I would like to get the rear differential oil change done for the peace of mind and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good dealer SA in SoCal (LA+OC).

I am also on the fence about having it done at a dealership or at some of the highly recommended shops mentioned in the forum (BenzWorks, Star Motor Werks, etc). Any recommendations and suggestions are greatly appreciated, thank you!

If you purchased pre-paid maintenance plan, you can force dealer to do rear differential oil change for free as it was listed as included service on official MB website.
Otherwise, I highly recommend Star Motor Werks at Costa Mesa, CA.
I actually took my 2020 C63s Coupe yesterday to there to get downpipe installed and they did exceptional job.
Their price is also very good. I am sure rear differential service will be cheaper than one from dealer.

Our cars don’t need it because I believe we have an electronic rear differential? I’m not sure if thats the right term but I know 2019+ don’t need it.

But, I got the prepaid maintenance so I made sure they did it.

Did it at Beverly Hills. The SA even looked in the system to see if I needed it and either he was just confused and went along with what I asked him or the system still says to do it.

Edit: I got my car May of 2019 and ended up getting this done shortly after of course, so maybe there was still some confusion about the FL at the time. Although, I would expect Beverly Hills to know.

My 2019 needed it and the dealer did it on prepaid maintenance without a fuss. The only way to know for sure with MY2019 was the presence or absence of the extra windshield sticker. Mine had it, so they did it. Both versions of the diff were electronic limited slip. They changed the clutch material at some point to one that didn't shed during break-in. But the specs of the diff were identical, meaning the sticker is really the only way to know.

I think by MY2020 all limited-slip diffs used the new material. If it were mine, I'd sleep well at night without a fluid change as long as my windshield didn't have the sticker.
