Anyone ever heard of a “quality hold” at the factory?

I did a factory order of a C63s back in October with delivery supposed to happen this month. Car started production the last week of February. Asked my SA for an update and he told me it’s under a “quality hold” at the factory. SA has no idea what that means because he has never heard seen term before and no other dealership he called has either. SA said system doesn’t show if car has completed production or not. Does anyone here know what that means or had it happen to them?

Haven't had this status, but from understanding how the production process works, my educated guess is that something got damaged or there are quality issues found with the car or a part and it's gonna have to go back. Most likely it didn't pass the final inspection at the end of the line due to damage or something not correctly installed, etc. Depending on the issue, it goes back to where it can be corrected. This is not unusual. There are multiple quality checks along the way. Things get measured and checked and the paint is inspected under proper lighting to make sure it's all good. If a problem is found, it goes back for repair/correction.

Quality Holds are standard practices of manufacturers. As manufacturers we don’t like them to happen but they are there for a reason - probably failed either an in process QA check or final QA check. There are common auality practice and normally you don’t recognIze them if you don’t get something built to order.

This is what I figured, but thank you for the confirmation.

Your knowledge of all things Mercedes is pretty amazing.

It must be quite an issue to fix. My car entered production on February 20 and it was supposed to be completed February 22nd.

Either some number of parts have entered the supply chain which are out of spec or some manufacturing process displayed a failure that was discovered after the fact. Your car may have been the exhibited failure, or it may have been produced at some point between the failure and the last "good" QC check at whatever control point the failure was captured at.

Either way it still suck knowing your brand new car not even delivery yet has issues already. Just hope your new car is not one of those car labeled as “ lemon” car.
