Current thoughts on touchup?

Ugh... I just spent 2k on getting my car ceramic coated... and a month after it finally set, I was wiping my car down and noticed a deep gash on one of my doors near the bottom panel. It looks like it got knicked so hard that bare metal is exposed. Dunno if it's from a rock chip or if someone dinged me.

I see a thread in the w204 section here , Do people still recommend the route with applying touch-up with a toothpick? I personally haven't done this myself and will probably need to lookup some videos after I see where I can get some touchup paint. My Car's paint is mojave silver metallic

If you're looking to do it yourself, watch the video below for an explanation on how chip kits work and find one of the companies to order the little kit from. Super simple to do and it comes out pretty amazing. I just used one to fix a big scratch I got on my bumper. I can't even notice it's there and I'm super OCD, and it works even better for small rock chips. They mix your actual paint code for the kit. I think this is your best DIY way of going about it IMO.

Thanks for sharing that video! I'm super hopeful that this might work. Will probably contact the ceramic shop but the video said to remove any chemicals near the surface. Wonder if any kits work with a ceramic coating... Probably not but now that I have this info at least now I can get their opinion on how to apply

I'd assume no issue with ceramic since your ceramic is gone where the scratch is. You're really just filling the hole then wiping across it to level the fresh paint with existing paint. I used a similar method with paint from a touch up pen and a ball point pen (to apply) on my previous ceramic coated car. The fix didn't look as good as you can get from these kits above but the ceramic didn't affect the process.

I'm excited! I haven't ever seen an application process to fix chips that seem to work as well as that video... will share results when it comes in! Just ordered the Dr ColorChip

Okay truth talk. I got the Dr. Colorchip kit in with my paint code. Super easy, relatively quick delivery (~1.5 weeks). But I saw some reviews that showed their kit came with instructions. There's absolutely no instructions in, around the box, in the shipping box, etc. Had to really rely on the video above and other youtube videos to get instructions.

Results: I guess I should've understood that this wasn't going to be a miracle worker. I have deep chips, going to bare metal. This being said, I was just hopeful, because some of the other videos I saw just made the chips just MAGICALLY disappear. Hold your britches, unless if you have a superficial chip, it'll still be there.
But, I am happy with the results. Before, I could notice it on a clear sunny day, and it would kill a little bit of me inside when I noticed it. Now, it was actually kinda hard to remember where the chip was because I had to go looking for it since it blends in well.

Do I think Dr. Colorchip did better than an OEM touch-up paint? Probably just as good. I don't think it fared better or worse than OEM touch-up. But the videos and application process sure made me feel more confident. Anyways, here's the pictures that I'm sure you're all waiting for.

BEFORE:

Then, APPLICATION:

Finally after drying and using the 2nd part which is to remove the excess paint:

The divots still exist, but at least the paint isn't gleaming bare metal at me when I see it in sunlight. GOOD ENUFF

Touch up paint is a very temporary solution and does nothing to help a prevent rusting or corrosion. If it was down to bare metal, it is in no way a replacement for proper repair. Even if you fill the chip with some sort of primer and then paint after, it creates a high spot around the edges, so cleaning and wiping vehicle along with just driving it will wear down the high spot and eventually the touch up paint covering the chip. Even aluminum can rust, if the object that caused the damage was steel, or another type of metal. galvanic corrosion is just as bad as typical steal rusting. As someone who manages a collision center/body shop, I understand people wanting to put a band-aid on the damage, especially when its low on the vehicle and largely out of sight or a lease. If its a car you own, or are financing, I would fix something like that every time. Once youve seen it once, your eyes will migrate there, and touch up paint never matches the factory finish. Just my 2 cents, but if you are happy with how it looks, just make sure you reapply once every 1-2 years or more depending on frequency of washing and mileage.
