Seeking Advice: Fun and Affordable Agile AMG's

Hi...I currently own a 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia 2.0 with a JB4 unit installed, and while it's a blast to drive on back roads, I find myself yearning for a bit more power. Lately, I've been considering exploring the world of AMG cars as an upgrade. I'm looking for something affordable, relatively new (2018 onwards), and more track-oriented rather than focused on drag racing. I would love to hear your suggestions and recommendations!

My main criteria are as follows:
  1. Affordability: I'm aiming for something within a reasonable price range, considering both the initial purchase cost and potential maintenance expenses.
  2. Year: I'm specifically interested in AMG models from 2018 onwards.
  3. Fun to Drive: I value a thrilling driving experience, so I'm seeking suggestions for AMG cars that are known for their agility, handling, and performance on the track.
I'm excited to explore the AMG lineup and would appreciate any insights you can provide. If you've owned or driven an AMG car, I'd love to hear about your personal experiences, particularly regarding their performance, reliability, and any potential drawbacks.

Thanks in advance for your help and input—I can't wait to hear your suggestions!

Don't take this the wrong way but your post is so vague... 'affordable' to you might be a totally different figure to someone else. There are a bunch of AMG models in the line up - some might be more suited to what you want than others.

All of the info you've asked for is readily available on this forum and others, plus youtube videos and reviews, none of it is particularly hard to come by.

Here's what ChatGPT said:

Here are some additional details about the recommended fun and affordable Agile AMG models:
  1. Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG: The A45 AMG is known for its compact size and impressive performance. It is equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces ample power, allowing it to accelerate quickly and deliver an exhilarating driving experience. The AMG Speedshift DCT gearbox offers lightning-fast gear changes and enhances the car's agility. Inside, you can expect a well-appointed cabin with modern technology features.
  2. Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG: The CLA45 AMG combines the performance of a sports car with the stylish design of a coupe. It features a similar powertrain to the A45 AMG, providing excellent acceleration and responsive handling. The sleek and aerodynamic exterior design is complemented by a luxurious interior with comfortable seating and high-quality materials. The CLA45 AMG strikes a good balance between performance and everyday practicality.
  3. Mercedes-Benz C43 AMG: The C43 AMG offers a more affordable entry into the AMG lineup while still delivering impressive performance. It features a 3.0-liter V6 biturbo engine that produces ample power and a satisfying exhaust note. The AMG-tuned 9-speed automatic transmission offers smooth gear changes and enhances fuel efficiency. The C43 AMG provides a comfortable and refined driving experience, making it suitable for both daily commuting and spirited driving.
  4. Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG: The GLA45 AMG combines the versatility of an SUV with the sportiness of the AMG performance brand. It boasts a compact size that makes it easy to maneuver in urban environments while still offering the performance expected from an AMG model. The turbocharged engine delivers impressive power, and the AMG-tuned suspension ensures responsive handling. The GLA45 AMG offers a well-designed interior with a good amount of cargo space and advanced safety features.
When considering any used car, it's important to have a trusted mechanic inspect the vehicle's condition and history before making a purchase. Additionally, researching the reliability ratings and common issues for the specific models you're interested in can help you make an informed decision.

Ultimately, the fun and affordability of these Agile AMG models will depend on your personal preferences and budget. It's recommended to visit local dealerships, schedule test drives, and compare prices to find the best option for you.

Kinda like the others said, you need to do your due diligence and research. You are posting this in the C63 forum, yet the cars you seem to consider are at the lower end such as the CLA 45 and C 43. There are separate forums for those, so if you seek input from owners you should start in those forums. Familiarize yourself with the different series cars. The CLA 45 and C 43 for example are really at different levels in their respective categories. The C 43 is to the C Class what the CLA 35 is to the CLA class, the 35 and 43 models are the entry level AMG models in their respective category. Whereas the 45 and 63 models are the top dogs in their respective category.

You may also wanna consider attending a day at the AMG Driving Academy to experience various AMG models in their natural habitat so to speak. It's a great experience and they have a good fleet, so you can sample the different cars and experience them.

But as said, you gonna have to figure out for yourself which AMG hits your spot. I've driven almost all modern AMGs from the A45 to the GT Black Series and the C63S coupe is the one for me, because of how it does everything well. It's a great canyon carver and excellent everyday car. It's not the ultimate track car, for that I would take the GT R and above, but I don't go to the track with my personal cars. The A/CLA 45 are neat little rockets, but personally not my cup of tea. They understeer because of the FWD-biased AWD and the turbo lag is the size of Texas, but they were fun to slide around on the skid plate at my most recent AMG event in Austria, but they are kinda terrible to drift even with the drift mode. Very artificial.

Specify a price tag or monthly lease payment.

Affordable and AMG means you are barking up the wrong tree.
