Emergency Braking Activating No reason

So I am driving to work today and about 5 times during my drive (even at speeds like 70) I get the rapid emergency collision warning light/chime and the car trying to brake itself. Absolutely no idea what is going on. The ONLY thing I can think of is that the other day I got pulled over for not having my front plate on (I have not used it in 3yrs of owning the car). So I put it on, which is a mount I got that screws into the front towing assembly on the bumper. Could this be triggering this system? Also, is there a way to turn it off completely for now til I can get this checked?

does anyone know where the sensor is for this? I read conflicting things---behind the star, behind the bumper itself, the mirror camera.

Depends on how the car is configured. If it has the Driver Assistance package, then there's a radar sensor behind the star. The star is flat and painted in this case instead of 3D. In addition there are stereo cameras in the windshield. Without DAS there's no radar sensor and only a single camera in the windshield. The bumper only has the parking sensors if you have the parking package. Tow hook license plate holders tend to set them off, but that shouldn't trigger emergency braking.

If you don't have DAS then the system is much more prone to false positives as it only relies on the single camera. Any reflection or dirt could cause phantom braking. Keep in mind that w/o the stereo camera of the Driver Assistance package, the system has to depth perception.

It doesn't have DAS to my knowledge. I did get a new shorter front plate mount for the tow mount and I put the plate on the side under the headlight so it doesn't over lap the grill now. I also cleaned the star, and windshield good. So far nothing today so maybe it's resolved.

Did you say you put the front number plate over the towing eye as in where the green arrow is? If so then this will trigger the pre-safe collision due to the distance sensor right next to it. The Star is for distronic (cruise control).

So what I did now is I got a new tow/plate holder made for the C63, and instead of having the plate offset more towards the middle of the car, I have it flipped an under the headlight. So far today, it has been fine with no incidents of it setting off the braking system. I think it might have been the first one I used was really long (the pole part) and had the plate literally like 6" off the front bumper.

I don't believe the ultrasonic sensors in the front bumper have any relation to the emergency braking. Theoretically they could be used, but these sensors are not even present unless the car was optioned with the parking assistance package. The emergency braking is standard, even if you don't option the parking assistance package, so it can't depend on these sensors.
