I've ended up just leaving it. I've noticed mine started to peel back in 2021 when I still had warranty, but it's a wear item, so dealership wouldn't do anything about it. They gave me the information of an upholstery shop near me who does a lot of work on Mercedes cars, but I never ended up going. Chances are it will just peel again. It's not unique to our steering wheels. Porsche owners for example have the same issue. Some of them used colored electric tape to wrap it and protect it from wearing. I just sort of think of it that my car has seen things and it's just part of driving it. It's peeled a bit more in the meantime since I took the picture below, but because I drive significantly less than I used to when the car was new, the wear has stopped for now. Just like a leather jacket, over time there will be some blemishes.
