You might consider fitting a taller wheel for increased straight line traction (wider tires change but usually don't increase your contact patch). But if you can get away with a tall tire (i.e. if stock is 26.2", try a 27") without runnig into ABS/speed sensor issues, it will increase your straightline contact patch to a greater degree than a wider tire, and slightly lower your effectively gear ratio as well, which is good for traction.
The widest tire I've seen someone fit on the back on a streetable sedan is 295 if you don't want headaches. Now, many have done 305's in back but it gets iffy on clearance, fenders cutting, etc. Your tire size depends on your wheels offset as well.
