M177 Variants (engine codes) and Technical Differences
I’ve read that there are different engine codes, like LS1 and LS2. I’ve also seen other codes, like M177.880 found in the latest SL and AMG GT. Is there a comprehensive list that outlines the differences? Or does anyone know the differences? I know they’ll make slight changes or modifications and/or improvements from model to model or year to year? I’m asking here because this is the most active AMG forum.

Key M177 Engine Variants
- M177.1 (Single-Scroll): Utilized in C63 and GLC63 models.
- M177.2 (Twin-Scroll): Utilized in higher-tier AMG models, including E63, S63, GLE63, and G63. This version features cylinder deactivation.
- M177 Hybrid (48V): Introduced in late 2019, this variant integrates a 48V starter-generator for increased performance and improved efficiency.
- M177 EVO: An updated version of the V8, featuring a flat-plane crankshaft and mild-hybrid assistance. It is designed for enhanced throttle response and performance in new 2026/2027 models like the S580.
- Aston Martin Variant: A specific tuning application of the M177 used in the DB11 V8, Vantage, DBX, and DB12. [1,

- Lubrication: All M177 variants use wet-sump lubrication, distinguishing them from the dry-sump M178engine used in GT cars.
- Turbocharger Layout: Both M177 and M178 utilize a "Hot V" configuration, placing the turbochargers between the cylinder banks for improved efficiency and reduced turbo lag.
- Performance Range: The M177 is highly versatile, with power outputs ranging from approximately 456 hp to over 700 hp, depending on the application.
- Internal Components: While base M177 models are durable, forged internals are typically required for reliable performance exceeding 800 hp. [1,
