M177 Variants (engine codes) and Technical Differences
Anyone have a detailed breakdown of the differences between various M177 variants (engine codes)?
I’ve read that there are different engine codes, like LS1 and LS2. I’ve also seen other codes, like M177.880 found in the latest SL and AMG GT. Is there a comprehensive list that outlines the differences? Or does anyone know the differences? I know they’ll make slight changes or modifications and/or improvements from model to model or year to year? I’m asking here because this is the most active AMG forum.
M177.1 (Single-Scroll): Utilized in C63 and GLC63 models.
M177.2 (Twin-Scroll): Utilized in higher-tier AMG models, including E63, S63, GLE63, and G63. This version features cylinder deactivation.
M177 Hybrid (48V): Introduced in late 2019, this variant integrates a 48V starter-generator for increased performance and improved efficiency.
M177 EVO: An updated version of the V8, featuring a flat-plane crankshaft and mild-hybrid assistance. It is designed for enhanced throttle response and performance in new 2026/2027 models like the S580.
