Carplay Question

I just bought a 2018 C63s and I know that year doesn't have carplay available and initially I was just seeing the regular oem home screen. But now when I get in the car a different screen pops up that shows carplay as an option to click on (photo attached). I know the screen is still the oem one and I know there is an available module people can install that adds carplay to the oem screen. The issue I'm having though, is that when I click the carplay icon it says "please insert the iPhone!". I tried using a USB cord to connect my iPhone and nothing changes. Does anyone here have any experience with this? Can anyone recommend a solution?
Thanks in advance.

That looks like a third-party aftermarket CarPlay module installed by a previous owner. There's probably a hidden USB cable somewhere to connect the phone. It won't be the built-in ports. Look in the center console storage compartments, or the glovebox.

@dayzen That screen does not look like OEM. My 2018 did come with Apple Carplay, but I had @BenzNinja code in OEM Android Auto too because I use Android devices.

You can look up your VIN and see if you have the "Smartphone Integration" equipment codes. From my memory the codes are 14U, 15U, 16U or something like that. Mercedes VIN Decoder | Free https://share.google/LZB1sbsgKLsTWD07z

I agree that your car may have a separate USB, or something to connect to that aftermarket module, check the glove box or center console. I suppose it could be a wireless module, but those are typically just plugged into the OEM USB port in the center console. Only one of the two ports in the console works for Android Auto / Apple Carplay whether you use your phone or an aftermarket Bluetooth device.

Thank you guys. There were no wires or other USB ports anywhere, but I was able to connect wirelessly to the carplay module. I had to connect to the module directly via Wifi and then also Bluetooth so it now works well.

CarPlay does more than music. Even with an AMG I have places to go for which I may need directions, and I wanna be routed around traffic and road closures. It’s a driving tool as much as it is an entertainment tool.

I used to use the Mercedes navigation, but I let the traffic subscription etc. expire as it just wasn’t worth paying for it for as little as I drive, so I exclusively use CarPlay and Google Maps. I also have a smart home, so when I’m driving a service loaner, I can open and close my garage from the CarPlay Dashboard. Basically CarPlay instantly transplants my personalized experience into any car.
