Failed Visual Inspection, HELP!

Any Lenient Smog Testers in Bay Area?
I just moved from Massachusetts to San Francisco, and I am trying to get my car registered in CA as is legally required. I just went in for the smog test, and failed the visual inspection due to an aftermarket air intake. The only aftermarket parts are a filter and some insulated tubing. Everything from the MAF on is completely stock, including both sets of cats.
I am wondering if anyone can PM/email me the name of a shop anywhere in the bay area that will be likely to overlook this minor alteration to allow me to pass the visual inspection.
NOTE: PLEASE DO DO NOT POST ANY NAMES/BUSINESSES ON THIS POST (I'd hate to be responsible for someone getting in trouble)
Now for my rant: I don't want to produce excess pollution; in fact I moved here to pursue a M.S. in Energy Engineering. I plan to find work in the alternative/renewable energy industry to help combat the climate change issues we are facing! Anyway, I don't understand the purpose of this visual inspection rule, as the sniffer test should provide the data necessary to ensure exhaust contains an acceptable amount of pollutants. As a poor grad student, I'd really hate to have to fork over $500 for another AMG intake.
Thanks for your help!
