Your Mileage May Vary

With gas getting kind of expensive and with people at the office driving hybrids making fun of my V12, I was curious as to what mileage I was getting on the freeway (the commute to my office is mostly freeway). So I reset the computer when I got on the freeway, and after 25 miles at an average of 60 mph and 25 minutes of driving (with the a/c off) I got 30.1 mpg! It was at night so traffic was light, the air was cool, and the elevation was a little above sea level. My office is near LAX and I live in Orange County, so there are no hills to speak of. I just set the cruise control and tried not to touch either brake or gas pedals as best I could. Of course the V12 is thirsty on surface streets so I'm afraid to take that measurement, but I don't think I will be trading the CL600 in for a Toyota Prius any time soon.

Funny you mention that. I was very surprised that my CL600 always gets 20.5 mpg when going to the office...which is almost all highway miles, but it does have some stop and go stoplight duty as well. The highway rating is 19 mph for the car.....and this is the first time I've seen a car beat the EPA estimations!

Now, driving around town with a few runs with the turbos spooled is an entirely different story!

For comparison, the same trips to work in my 03' S55 were netting me 17-18mpg. Who would've thought the V12 would save gas?! I guess the V12TT version has the cylinder deactivation going though?

Hello Red,
Yes, I was also very pleasantly surprised when my V12 was returning better mileage than my old V8 engined '97 BMW 840. The cylinder deactivation technology in the CL really works -- and more importantly, I love how it's imperceptible

BTW, next time you're making an approach into LAX, look down on your left and give me a wave. I'll be in the silver CL on the 105 fwy below you Just don't drop any chunks of ice on me

Haha...I wouldn't have time to look down...the arrival into LAX in a 20 year old Airbus A-300 definetly keeps you on your toes.

Funny you mention the ice chunks....in Narita, Japan it is a requirement that you have to lower the landing gear about 20 miles out to prevent from dropping ice chunks on the farmers.
