what are these lights/buttons mean?

On the left hand side of the instrument cluster, there is amber/yellow light lit up at all times. Right beneathe this light is something I guess you use to adjust brightness of instrument cluster ??? what is this light?

On the LEFT side, there is "R" button and sometimes there is a red light that flashes above this "R"....what does this light mean?

I dont have the books that came with the car

On my 2003 CL500 the far left knob is for instrument cluster illumination. To the immediate right of this knob is the "engine malfunction indicator lamp". Above that lamp is the "brake fluid low or parking brake engaged" lamp. Above the "brake" lamp is the "supplemental restraint system" (SRS) malfunction indicator lamp. This last lamp should shut off after 4-5 seconds when the car is started. If your vehicle has an indicator lamp "above" the cluster illumination knob it may be an after market alarm system, radar detection device, etc. The operators' and comand system manuals are reasonably priced and can be purchased from any MB dealer or by calling Mercedes at 1-800-367-6372.
