Squeaking noise from steering wheel

Squeaking noise from steering wheel
So I get the car back from the MB dealer - most of the stuff I has issues with still arnt fixed - great. Car goed back 4th Feb for ANOTHER 2 weeks. Damn this.
Anyway - I get home and notice that as im turning the steering wheel to go up my drive it makes a squeaking noise - from roughly directly in front of the steering wheel - sounded like it was under the bonnet. So I get the wife to turn the wheel lock to lock whilst the bonnet is popped - strangely I cant hear the noise though! However the wife CAN hear it from inside the car.
Ive not done another 200 miles or so and at any speed and any turn of the steering wheel I get the squeaky noise.
I havnt yet checked the steering fluid but will do some evening this week but does any one here have any ideas what this could be if its NOT the fluid?
And if it IS the fluid - where the hell has it gone? could there be a leak? If so what things shold I look for for tell tale signs of leaking?
