check engine/ shifting rough

I recently test drove a 02 cl600 while on the test drive i noticed that the cel came on and it lost some acceleration and that it was shifting hard like a hard shift but was shifting to all the gears. So i pulled over and turned it off and restarted it the cel was still on but it accelerated normal but was still shifftin kind of rough so i pulled over and checked the gas cap and it seemed like the gas cap wasn't on tight. My buddy has a 01 cl600 he told me his did that before and had to go thru some cycles to reset just need some input thanks i really fell in love with this car it has the full lorinser kit with only 59,000 miles, but don't wanna move to fast

Sounds like it may be in "limp mode". CEL could be a lot of things, and most are expensive.

so how do you think it got into limp mode? Is that something minor, and will it be in my best interest to purchase it?

The car goes into limp mode because of a fault. It could be major or minor. Mine went into limp mode with a CEL last month, with similar symptoms to the ones you described. Turned out the car needed oil pressure sensors and coil packs for both banks, to the tune of over $8k. I would definitely have the car you are looking at checked out by an MB specialist, and don't buy it unless it is properly sorted out.

Before you do anything, get the car hooked up to an OBDII scan tool and check for codes. Something specific triggered the CEL light and without the code you're shooting in the dark. It really could be anything. Start off by providing an OBD code and detailed symptoms. Then we can put 2 and 2 together. Good luck!
