How to check/add Tranny fluid to w215?
Greetings All and Happy New Year.
I have a low level hum or drone sound when accelerating from 5km/hr up to about 85km/hr.
The car is quiet at highway speed, but I wonder if this is normal or just the sound of the 300 hp drivetrain. I'd like to check the tranny fluid and top up if necessary, but seeing as there is no dip-stick, I can't. Must I get it checked at the dealer or can an independant garage or myself do it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Dealer can do it, independant shop should be able to do it or you can buy the "special tool" aka "dipstick" from the dealer and never have to worry about taking it somewhere again. I just bought the "tool" for my car and it was $50(my cost).........I think it was $6x.00 retail.

Mopar,
Great info.
I also found out about checking the servo oil for the power steering and it was lower than 'max'. I will try to get to the dealer tomorrow and buy some MB power steering fluid (oil) and seee if the sound will go away.
Thanks

It's just a really long universal dipstick that is used on all M-B transmissions that don't come with the dipstick from the factory. The dealer's parts person will know what you want and(should) have it in stock.

Yea, it's really just a long dipstick. I bought mine on eBay for something like $25. It's the same length as the dealer unit, but aftermarket. Do an eBay search for "722.6 transmission" and it'll pop up.
All,
When you have the dipstick tool, you'll notice that there are temperature readings on the dipstick. The 722.6 transmission requires that the fluid be checked at 25C and 80C to get an accurate reading. You'll also need the red locking pin at the top of the filler tube after you're done as they're one time use. Costs about $1.00 from your dealer.
If your car has over 40K miles on it and assuming that it has the 722.6, 5-speed transmission, you might as well do a fluid and filter change if you're buying the tool.
