Soft Door Close
You could also disconnect the battery for 10-15 mins reconnect it then the soft close might work again, but not sure for how long.

i did disconnect the battery cuz someone else told me to do it, but nothing, so this is why it think its something in the door that has to be replaced.
If that's the case, I would go to a mechanic. It is located in the trunk but you don't want to be messing with that powerful battery. I had the same issue, but after going to the dealer, he messed up up central locking system. Fortunately, it was their fault so he didn't charge me for the mistake and gave me a decent discount on the pneumatic issue.

I just had to replace mine and had the same loud bang and subsequent whoosh as well. The whoosh sound tells you that your PSE is working

The white plastic cap holds the pneumatic diaphragm back under strong spring pressure. The sad thing is that MB could have made the plastic body cap on the unit 1/4" thicker and it would have lasted 2x longer. There is no replacement part for the cap, however, after looking at the part it may be possible to epoxy the cap back into place.
This is a common problem that usually happens after 7 years or so. Probably also depends on use (door closes).
The replacement is substantial. The door panel, inner door insulation, outside door handle, rear front door speaker, keyless go antenna (if equipped), inner and outer front window seals, as well as the front window and regulator need to come out in order to get the door locking unit out of the door frame. The unit is quite large (approx. about 1' long by 6" wide.). I had a friend who is a full time local MB tech help me with the repair and it took about 4 hours.
The part # for the Drivers side (left) is A2157201335 .. Passenger side (right) is A2157201635.... Price is about $650.00 for a new unit.
You may want to verify part #'s with your MB parts counter. My part #'s reflect the door locks for a 2003 CL. I would assume, however I know better than to assume, that the part #'s are the same for 2001 - 2005. Best to verify though.

If you are willing to tackle the task, make sure you trace where the window fits into the regulator with a sharpie. Makes getting the window alignment easier.

Your method works if the PSE circuit on the Pneumatic Pump is going bad/becoming weak and has de-actiavted itself from the loop due to time out issues. The way you know if you have a blown soft close issue is that you will hear a big whoosh of air in and around the latch when the pump activates attempts to do its job.

Thank you
