2002 CL500 Passenger Front End "Creaking" Shock

Well, 30K miles later on my 2002 CL500 I bought last year and so far only minor issues. Its a daily driver so I feel lucky. However, when getting a broken door handle fixed the other day I asked my mechanic why I hear a creaking/squeaking sound from the passenger front end right where the tire is when someone gets in and out or going over bumps. I remember Stephens Service in Sacramento once lubed the ball joints when a similar sound appeared last year and it was fine since...till now.

My mechanic who isnt a Mercedes specialist (I only go to a specialist when its something major/suspension/electronic related) looked at the passenger side shock and noticed the protective rubber boot that covers the strut was hanging low, not like the driver side where the protective rubber was up all the way and intact. He said my strut is bad. Does anyone here know if thats a sign for a bad strut or simply the boot needing adjustment? Could the sound simply be another ball joint issue?

Thanks
