The bulb itself is good. I swapped to the other side to confirm. Something is wrong in the circuit. The plug looks pretty clean. Anyone had a similar problem before?

Start following the wiring from that socket back to the origin. Somewhere along the way you will likely find your problem.
Many times the problem arises in the wiring in the trunk neat the trunk hinge. On the non electric trunk opening cars this is the area where the wiring follows the hinge on the right side.
On electric trunk opening optioned cars, more times than not the issue is in the loom where it retracts at the top right of the trunk area.
This is a common problem with the W215 after hundreds of trunk open/close cycles.
