Tranny rebuild or factory remanufactured

So today after some tranny issues on the cl500 I just bought used a few weeks ago. And some crazy complaints I filed to the MBUSA corporate offices about the dealership refusing to fix the issue. They decided to use their funds to fix everything for free. The question from my SA came up to choose between having the stealer rebuild my tranny that only has 53k miles on it or get a factory remanufactured ones. Any recommendations?

I have no experience in this area, but I say factory. I doubt many dealership techs have the experience or knowledge to rebuild a transmission where as the home office probably has someone doing it everyday.

I would go with the factory reman which would be assembled under much more rigid procedures and by techs who do this work every day. I know that I have read MB tech articles regarding the rebuilding of parts/assemblies at the dealer ship level and how they generally don't do it as the quality of the repair is contingent upon the abilities of the tech performing the work.

given the choice, I would definitely choose the factory remanufactured. Is the trans that failed a 5 or 7 speed?

I've got one with 57k on it. Makes me nervous, thought they were bullet proof. Never really heard of any tranny problems- what were the symptoms?

LOL I bought the car with 53K miles on it a month ago and all along i was worrying about possible ABC issues and this tranny issue hit me. You'll definitely notice if something is wrong with the tranny. There was a hard shift from first to second gear but after that he car drove fine. So in comfort mode when the car starts in 2nd the drive was fine. Then after driving couple hundred miles it did a hard down shift when slowing down between 20mph and 40mph. the straw that broke the camels back was the car was going into limp mode every 4-5 times i drove it but then would be back to normal once i turned the ignition off and on.

But then again those symptoms could be minor issues from what i've been reading. Like the hard upshift could be a conductor plate or the O ring on one of the electrical harnesses that is getting leaked on. The limp mode for everyone else was a speed sensor. I just happened to be unlucky!

Also after this free fix i thought about extending my warranty for 2 years 20k at $4k through my bank but i spoke with adam at arnott, he emailed me back yesterday saying the coil over kit could be out around feb next year and would cost around $3k and i figure i could find someone to install for $1k when the time comes. I'm hoping my car works fine after this until that coil over kit comes available.
