CL500 TIRE PRESSURES

the sensors must be more fragile when fitted to low-profile tires, i think.

so, i have had many replacements over 50,000 miles.

on this last round, when the benz dealer returned the vehicle to me, the tire pressures were reading 39psi all around.

i thought that was too high, bur let it go as a signature of a tier pressure monitoring system normalizing.

after a 65 mile trip, i put the car away in a a/c warehouse. was reading 40psi all around at the time.

after two days at an a/c 74 degree climate, the pressures read 36psi all round.

now, benz in its gas cap door recommends a virtual 29psi all around.

my question is, why didn't the benz dealer regulate the pressures to this level?

is there some bulletin that says 36-39psi is a better pressure?

all ears.

mine state 29psi (front) and 32psi (rear) on the gas door. Oddly enough, when I picked mine up from the MB dealer all 4 tires were at 40psi as well. It was winter here, the service tech explained that they recommend higher pressure in winter. Understood, but it seems like a BIG difference.

what tires[mfg and sizes] are you running by the way?

i am running continental extreme contact dws. an all season tire.

as opposed to the oem spec of a summer[dry weather] tire.

in houston, i prefer tires that are good in the wet.

the dealer explanation for these high inflation pressures is that the side walls of these tires were considered too soft vis a vis the oem specification.

now, i have run these tires at 31psi all around.

and when i had them installed at the dealer, an alignment was performed.

now, in prep for an inspection sticker, it has been reported to me that the front tires have worn excessively on the inside edge. i consider this a camber issue[an alignment issue].

now, as you might notice, i own a few benzes. i have never had front rubber wear on the inside.

this makes me think that the alignment that was done when these conti's were installed was done ineptly - that the camber was set inaccurately.

in this instance, the alignment has revealed that the camber was wrong and special components were fitted to correct this camber error.

any other thoughts?

I'm running Continental also- ContiTouringContact & ContiProContact. The reason for 2 diff types is mine needed 2 tires shortly after I bought it & the tire rep said the ContiPro's replaced the ContiTouring's. I"m not really thrilled with the Continentals, but the last time I said that some guy went crazy on me (I think he worked for them ). Anyway, I might try Hankook's next time- I've heard good things about them and they're (very) reasonable. I've been told they make a nice all season radial that fits the CL500. It snows where I live so I MUST use an all season tire.
