Rear end clunk

Hi,

I have noticed that when I hit speed bumps or bigger bumps in the road I have a clunk/thud coming from the passenger side rear(uk). My mechanic had a look and says all the arms look ok. There are no ABC warnings and apart from the front sinking a little over a few days it seems ok.Any ideas on the noise and what would be most likely. I bought really cheap as a project car knowing that it needs some work and can do most things myself. Any help appreciated.

2001 CL500.

Thanks

Could be the top of the struts that are loose, to acces you need to remove a panel on the side above rear seats (never did this myself though)

Check your spare tire, make sure all is secure and tight.

Check your rear sub frame bushings as well. You can see if they are collapsed or not.

Hi,
Are they really big bushes? I had the car up and all the small bushes etc seem fine.It looked like one of the large bushes(the one nearest the front of the car) was cracked but not sure if it just looked like this due to the car being jacked up.Also should you be able to twist the strut on its bush very slightly by hand?
thanks

The rear sub frame bushings are located at the rear end where the rear sub frame attaches to the frame. This is where you are hearing noises so it is worth checking.

If your have cracked or torn bushings on the suspension components (as you stated), it is time to replace.

Did you first try tightening the strut tower/supports to see if this fixes your issue ?

Hi,
Yes and they were tight, However today I fitted some new rims and noticed that there is some fluid around the strut area so looks like the strut may be done.
thanks
