I've never owned an mb before and am more of a pragmatic/cheapskate.
I love these cars though but truthfully I couldn't take a big repair cost hit atm.
I intend to buy a car soon but was defaulting to something more mainstream, bland and just less potentially volatile.

w140 so no abc. At first glance, assuming good mechanical condition, would you consider this a good deal?
Also, is there any reason why kbb would value this at ~2.5k and edmunds at ~4.8k, other than inherent inadequacy of whatever algo is being utilized?

KBB and similar sites are better for mainstream models. I sold my 2011 A8 last spring for $7000 above book, so ignore it on the less common models. If you are scared of possible costs, stay away from anything German. If you're okay with the risk, I'd say that looks like a nice example and at that mileage with it's condition, I don't think the price is unreasonable. I would get it inspected by an experienced Benz mechanic, though, in case it is hiding some secrets. Secrets can be pricey.

All these old benzes have the repair bills of $100k cars because they were $100k cars
Unless you can do your own work you'll be in store for four figure repair bills , that's why resale value is so low
The w140 after 1997 were pretty reliable , earlier ones had terrible electrical problems

It's highly recommended you post in the correct forum for the best possible answer. You will be much more likely to find current/experienced owners of the 140 coupe.
