I read on the forum about a piece of plastic that breaks in the shifter boot. I've noticed that sometimes that the car doesn't get out of park right away. At first I thought it I was pulling it, but then it happened a few more times. So I looked it up and found the shifter problem. So I found the replacement part that's milled from aluminum. It's like $58 on amazon. Is this a simple diy a novice can tackle? I also read that I could just break off the piece all together and not need to press the brakes to shift out of park. What are your thoughts??
Be careful , there are three different size metal parts , that's why that one lists 11mm
you can't know which size your shifter uses until you disassemble your shifter . Some repair kits send all three size metal parts for about $100, so you'll have the right part when you open up your shifter .
Personally I would just remove the plastic piece completely , and not put in the metal piece . However this will let your car shift out of park even when the car is off , or no key is present .
So assuming you don't have children or pets that might knock the shifter out of park accidentally it's ok to remove it . If you need the added safety of the interlock you can get the metal piece
Depends how skilled you are , you have to disassemble the console and drill apart the metal shifter box . There are videos on YouTube search for Mercedes shifter stuck
