Shift adaptation procedure 722.6

Writing this post to share some experience with installing/ repairing 722.6xx transmissions. Most w215 models came with this 5 speed gearbox

it’s commonly known to replace the conductor plate and 13 pin connector on these transmissions. Over time the 13 pin connector will leak, causing weird transmission behavior and can eventually wick up into the transmission control unit, believe it or not. The conductor plate will eventually “wear out” for lack of a better term, over time the heat cycles of the transmission from driving/parking the car will degrade the sensors and sensor housings.

The main point of the post is I wanted to share how valuable I find the transmission shift adaptation procedure in the proprietary Mercedes diagnostic software for these cars.

years and years ago I installed a 2001 e55 amg transmission (722.636) instead of the 2002 cl500 transmission in my car(722.633). The transmission was plug and play but I had a feeling it was never perfectly optimized in regards to the software settings and adaptations since I installed a slightly modified version in place of my old unit

you’ll need some open road to complete the process, along with the xentry software of course, altogether it took me about 30 minutes to complete. The instructions note to leave the car running for an additional 10 minutes afterwards so the adaptations can be fully saved to the tcu

the process involves performing 4x shifts between each gear, at relatively slow speeds/engine rpm, so like I said you’ll need to do this test on a long open stretch of road. I did this procedure late at night while the roads were cleared

the transmission was already shifting smooth but I must say, it’s virtually impossible to notice the gear shifts besides exhaust note and rpm fluctuation. I’m surprised after 120-130k miles that this unit can perform so smoothly

one extra tip is to use quality transmission filters and ensure the filter is firmly pressed into place. If the filter is not firmly seated into the receptacle on the valve body, the transmission fluid can have turbulence and cause issues. The filter should be able to stay in place after it is pressed into the receptacle. The transmission oil pan is not how the filter stays in place! Using the oil pan to hold the filter instead of a proper installation is not good

Is this procedure possible without any software ? I thought I will do this:
warm car to proper temp, do the reset with key and pedal, thenDrive through 1st to 5th gently without going above 1800 rpmDo that at least 4 timesLet it run in P for 10 minutesWhat do you think?

Does this work? I've never got the key/pedal method to work, I used DAS to reset the adaptations lately and that seemed to work

Is there a scanner I can purchase to do the adaptation's other than DAS or will you need tokens
