Another rear lights thread

I looked - I promise I looked! But cannot seem to find my specific issue.

Dash tells me a bulb is out (sometimes) - Rear left tail light. First thing I do is clean up the contact surface (bit powdery, but nothing major). Light is not out. Right now, the light is not out.

However.... On closer inspection....

Left side light is not illuminated

Right side light is illuminated

I didn't think there was even a bulb in the side part of the unit - and before I remove it and upset the spiders that are probably living in there somewhere, I thought best to ask.
Am I missing something? Do I need to remove the unit to change a bulb? Or are my eyes playing tricks on me?

That tail lamp warning message is really irritating!

yes
this is called automatic replacement light
one of your major lights fails to run
it is replaced by another one temporarily

you have corrosion in the the contact if all your bulbs are ok

only way to fix this is remove the rear light and sand the contacts
remove the side interior panels to find the invisible bolts

to get the lights back to normal after that is turning of the contact, lights off, remove key,
let the dash turn off, turn back on, sometimes one, sometimes a couple of times

Thanks for responding. Not sure I follow however.

It's the left side-marker that is not illuminating - looks like a reflector. The right one appears illuminated; but I don't see a bulb. Is there a bulb?

I understand the temporary replacement system, but its the side of the warning message that also appears at fault. Didn't think to have a go at the contacts though - thanks, I'll take a look tomorrow

so here we go

fix = 30 min

remove clips's
remove plastic and side panel
remove 4 8mm bolts
push the light out
fix leaking point
clean up corrosion points (sandpaper them 600)
( I recommend soldering the two pins as you will never replace partial parts and these points are often causing the problem)
done

One of my tail lights would do similar things, sometimes the bulb would come and and sometimes it would not because of rust. What I did was what benzninja did but since mine was pretty rusty at the bottom I connect the connections again and it works good now. I also made a drain system for it so no water gets in it.

Dude. Thanks for posting those pictures. So helpful.

From the image of the removed part, it seems our side markers are a bit of a misnomer; however, you have appeared to circle what could be responsible for the side marker illumination:

Am I right? Is this odd looking part of the assembly a lamp of some sort?

One more question - solder.... Do you mean to apply solder to the areas that we clean up with the sandpaper? This sounds like a great idea, but before I crack out my rusty (pun intended) soldering skills, thought I ought to check

Cheers;
Chris

my pleasure
nope, just showing problem points
just soldered these last time as it was the third time these points went wrong
other points, just sand them

Finally took the light out and took a look.. I didn’t fully understand the images before, so I took some pictures for the next person confused

This PCB is the side marker module

Remove the retaining screw and separate

Address the corrosion

Assess the unit on both sides

I have ordered some phosphoric acid to address the corrosion and have some spare LEDs from a faulty brake light from my partner’s SLK. I will try and repair the unit as I cannot seem to find a replacement online (I haven’t called the dealer yet).

Will let you know if the repair works! 😎

So I cleaned up and repaired the PCB. I replaced the funny-looking LED and soldered in some wire to replace the missing copper from the board.

Light now works but I still get an error - I think this may be a resistance thing, so will swap L & R to see if the message hops to the other side. Beyond that, I'm stumped. But at least the side marker illuminates again!
