Check engine light NOT coming on
Hi all, need some help. My 2002 CL55 check engine light is NOT coming on when I put the ignition in the ON position when all the other lights come on. Because of this, it cannot pass state inspection. Not sure how long this has been going on, just moved to NJ and that is where the state inspection failed. Previously in PA I had the inspection done at the dealer who may have been overlooking it but I am not sure. Dealers don't do state inspections in NJ. There is no problem with the car, drives perfectly. Has only been serviced at the dealership and not aware of any tampering that would disable it. Went to the dealer here who said the whole dash would have to be replaced which costs almost as much as the car itself. All the other lights work fine and are not dim or fused at all. Any advice or ideas? Unable to drive the car because there is no inspection.

With zero other dash issues (have you pulled codes to see if any are set? Then check to see if those codes WOULD have popped a CEL light..) it sounds a lot like someone pulled the bulb.
I highly doubt a single bulb or circuit affecting a single bulb has burned out. Bear in mind that I am talking completely from gut feeling here - I have absolutely zero experience with the dashes in these cars (so if a Merc tech or someone who actually knows something wants to chime in..) but my first stop would be pulling the dash and finding out if the bulb is even there.
Now, that being said, if you are having troubles with the light and there is some genuine problem with it that isn't related to it not being present, (and you're not bothered with having a functional light..) just stick a 12v bulb on key power to a timed relay. Key power powers the relay, bulb comes on, the wombles do their checks then the bulb goes off.
I absolutely have never, ever done this to circumvent OBD checks to register a car. I would never dream of doing something as deceptive as this. ... cough.
