why the wheel wells?

why the wheel wells?
why did they have to bulge out the wheel wells...was this done for style or for purpose? i saw the new s class in person recently and i kept thinking to myself what a beautiful car why could they not just sleek down those wheel arches...take a look at these pics of the new cl...for me these make it look awful...but what are your opinions??
