MPG Computer Weirdness

I recently acquired an '05 CL500 with 39K miles on it. I have been watching the MPG computer and I've noticed some strange computations with it. I have a 20 mile trek to the office and i've noticed that the MPG from door-to-door is somewhere around 15 - 17MPG.

HOWEVER, if, after I drive the first mile of my journey I reset the computer the MPG is often better than 22MPG. What gives? Could I use that much fuel in the first mile to make that much of a difference?

Has anyone seen the same thing? ? ?
