CL550, CLS550 or E550

Been looking for a 3rd car -- not daily driver.

As usually happens, I progressed from looking at C55's to E55's but decided against them because of expensive maintenance issues. I could afford the upkeep but I know it would eat away at me and I just don't want the hassle. Seems the E550 would be acceptable -- still fast but without all the upkeep.

Now I'm looking at the next stage up -- CL's and CLS's. Since the CLS is built upon the E platform, is it basically the same car? Heard some somewhat negative comments about them here as just not being as nice but I assume that just means compared to the CL -- not an E.

From everything I've been reading about hear, it seems the CL's will have the same maintenance issues I'm trying to avoid with the E55's regardless if it's just a CL550???

Its possible I could go for a pre-07 but I really like the facelifts.

And I am familiar with the mercedes in general. Have a GL and ML now and had 400E before -- parents had S and SL's.

Ultimately I think I want a CL, but because of the high maintenance issues, the CLS seems to be more practical. I can't see any of the AMG's, 55's, 63's or 600's making sense at all. I won't be taking it to the track or anything like that, so why add the extra maintenance costs . . .

- C55 is actually pretty reliable and fun car
- E55 is a beast if you want something larger. E550 should have similar issues, except for the ones related to the supercharger and intercooler.
- E550 is nice and somewhat fast, but if you're looking for a fun/weekend car, probably not what you want
- CLS (550 and 55) is similar to the E, just a different type of styling, some may think it's edgier and more modern/fun
- CL is a large heavy cruiser that is just plain sweet, but at the same time can have the same maintenance issues as most higher end MB's

My personal rule of thumb is that the more expensive the Mercedes, the more problem prone and maintenance issues/costs it'll have. I guess you really just need to think of what kind of third car you want.

Cl550 is a car in it's own class. The Cls and E can't stand next to it
