Have been provided with this quote for ABC - too expensive?

Hi guys,

I have a few issues with my CL and I was offered the following quotes (am based in London, UK) - can you please let me know if these sound right to you?

- There is a rattling sound coming at low engine RPM - I was told ABC pump needs to be replaced. Quote is £800 + VAT (refurbished/remanufactured unit from Mercedes), labour is £500 + VAT and also additional cost for fluid

- Both front lower suspension arms have excessive movement in ball joints. Quote for both arms is £350 + VAT and labour to replace them is £150 + VAT

Also, would you recommend any indie garage in Central London or South London?

Thanks a lot!

Let me tell you what I paid in Berkhamsted through Hughes for my CL500 whose pump failed at 39,000 miles (same symptoms). £2,200 less discount of £200 for being a member of the MB UK club. Looks like yours will be much the same.
The worst part was that everyone said "oh we've never heard of one failing before 150,000 miles."

I should have added. My local garage would not tackle this job and passed it on to Hughes. I think you might be better sticking with a franchised garage - at least you get a 12 months warranty that way

Rattling noises are usually the belt idler pulleys and belt tensioner. If you hear moaning noise from the ABC pump do not replace the pump unless the system lost fluid from a leak etc. If there has been NO LEAKS thhen save your money and only replace the pump dampener! Its around $400 US for the part and changes in about 1/2 hour without completely removing the pump from the engine. You can remove the belt and then remove the top bolt of the 2 long bolts that hold the pump also loosen the lower bolt. With a long screw driver you can pry the pump to the right and get just enough room to remove the dampener. Replace it and watch all that noise go away! Good luck!
Never buy a used damper as they do wear out over time always buy new! Crap be careful not to pry on the pump body! only pry where the bracket to the engine is so you dont damage the pump.
