A Dripping Right Rear Strut!!!! HELP!!!
Greetings everyone.
I am need of some very experienced person to suggest the cause and subsequent solution to the following problem.
I have bought a CL600, had for almost 2 years now and will be keeping it long term hence my time and significant investment in maintenance.
I noticed the right rear strut was leaking.
I ordered a replacement unit from ABC specialist parts supplier based in Netherlands and fitted it.
This passed calibration on Mercedes Star.
After 400 miles I noticed a groan from the right rear strut. This groan became louder and louder as the miles went by.
Replacement strut was sent by parts supplier and fitted but will not pass calibration.
The removed strut was returned and ABC specialist advised that no fault found with strut.
it was noted on star that Ma measurement on rear right strut was higher than others.
Continuity of cables from control unit to strut measured at 0.3 ohms. Which is what I would want to see.
Level sensor, potentiometer, was replaced
Ma now in same range as other three struts, but it still does not pass calibration.
Rear valve block changed, still does not pass calibration.
Suspension control module replaced, still does not pass calibration.
The fitted strut still makes the same groaning noise.
The above works have been completed by a Mercedes specialist.
We are all baffled as to what is causing this issue.
The pump is new
the accumulator are new
the system is flushed with new filter
Car has only covered 62,000 miles is 2007.
The differential has been changed to LSD supplied by quaife UK.
Any advice or observations greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.
Alex

Did your original strut groan?
I also ordered a pair of replacement struts from the Netherlands. I had groaning from one. Eventually I returned both.
Personally I would only get my replacement struts from MB. Price wise they’re not really so much more than aftermarket alternatives.

Interesting
The original did not groan!!
Did you have any problems with calibration after the Dutch ones were fitted??
The next step is two brand new ones from merc.
Any other info greatly appreciated.
many thanks

Got It Sorted!!!
The solution was ........
The rear right was replaced with a genuine part, all noises gone and calibration passed first time!!
The left side rear was replaced with a genuine new strut as well.
Two new level sensors, genuine were also fitted.
it was noted that the non genuine strut is of different construction compare to a genuine part.
The moral of the story is by genuine parts!!
The circled witness mark was on the Netherlands supplied strut and appeared after less than 500 miles
Picture shows Netherlands supplied strut, new genuine and new used.
