I think that car has 8-piston front calipers, which would be four pads per front wheel, and 4-piston rear calipers, which would be two pads per rear wheel. Perhaps you mean 8 total pads for the front axle.

8 pads? wow, my 89 300TE is almost an AMG then if it has 8 pads.... lets count, 2 per wheel... that makes 8 with my math. Mercedes brake pads are so easy to change. You will go through 6-8 sets of front pads before you will ever have to change the rear pads. I changed a set on my mom's E in 20 min the other day and I was not working quickly. $1000 for a brake pad replacement should include a hot date and an exotic massage.

I have found that the newer the car, the easier it is to work on the brakes.... I can't say I have changed any pads on a CL but with a w124 it only takes a hammer and small punch/pin to drive out a the 4 holding pins, and a tire iron and jack and a large flat blade screwdriver or pry bar to push the pisons back in the caliper so you can slide the old pads out and the new pads in.

anything tricky to change brakes w/ the sbc system? can you just push in the calipers like on a regular car?
