CL55 versus CL600/CL500

Hey guys,

Long story short---I have had a CL500 under lease, and after it expired I got a S55 which I kept for a while, but eventually missed the appeal of the CL, so I switched to a CL600. Job loss forced me to sell it, and things may be turning around for me again in the future so I'm considering a CL55 as a possibility. Can't afford the new one....but I could probably pull off an 03-04 model once they drop a bit more.

I liked the way the 55 series engine responded in my S55 much more than the CL600. The V12 seemed too quiet and too sluggish (until you really got on it). The 55 seemed better as a daily driver with more usable power and a sweeter engine note...despite the chirp...lol!

My question is, how are the 55's holding up over time? I know about the ABC issues and the standard CL B.S., but I was wondering if the 55 drivetrain is a solid one that will last?

geez, can't get away from the CL I see... I won't blame you, I've had the 500, then gone to CL600. Thinking on the 65 with within this year or in 08 given the current drop in price, hopefully financially we're ok by then since we love travelling and few trips already scheduled this year but anyways... back to your q.

I can't tell you if the CL55 tranny is any better or worse than CL600, but I do know on the SL55 it was junk! went back and forth 4 times to the dealer on 03 SL55, until my wife gave out and said sell it! That said, I do agree with your point on the 55 engine, easy to drive daily. 600 are more for long distance, that's why I'm thinking of getting one each, keep the 600 and 55 at the same time

Everytime I see a CL (which is quite often working in Naples Florida...land of the wealthy..) I can't help but take a second look. I saw a black CL550 and it still hasn't grown on me....but it somehow has managed to make the previous CL look a little dated! I guess my point is, I just can't decide if I will go through the hassle of having another Merc Benz product.
