Assuming one could get the financial aspects to work out -
CL55 versus CL600 W216 - Never.
CL55 versus CL600 W215 - close call. I still have a tough time with the notion of giving up my bigger brakes, AMG ABC system, and manual mode shifting with the steering wheel buttons in order to get the (admittably huge) straight line performance benefit of the CL600.
Bigger brakes, ABC system work, and steering wheel upgrades are uber-expensive for converting a non-AMG car. Although, if one compares later SL55's to sport package SL600's, this gap is narrowed. But, the level of upgrades for a later SL600 sport never happened on the W215 CL600.
My plan is to give up my CL55 for a W215 CL65 at some point. However, a 5.5 -> 6.1 liter conversion, higher compression, lowered SC boost level, and ditching of the air-fluid intercooler is an idea I've been kicking around for my CL55. This would be more appealing to me than the CL65.

I can mod the 55 to be close enough to the 600 to keep me happy.

As being an owner of both a 2005 E55 and 2003 CL600
Both cars are for sale at the moment to buy a CL65... but to tell you the truth the CL600 stops fine and the car is ultra smooth.... which car would I prefer ... well the CL600 hands down... more luxury and easier to upgrade as well as a lot more rare... all CL600'S were special oder from the dealer... NOT MANY AROUND....and the v-12 is so linear and so contant in power that you hardly feel it ... it just goes... think CL55-muscle car and the CL600 (Bentley) feel and smoothness with the Benz power to back it up......
