CL63 030 Blk/Blk
a couple of things

I have the CL63 with the 030 package and I was wondering about a couple of things.

1. Has anyone driven the car both with and without 030? I seems to me that I recall reading that the package included some modification in engine software that enabled the higher governor.
2. Is it just my imagination or does the engine really sound better in manual mode?

Had CL63 at launch w/o 030 for 1-2K mis....have had CL63 030 for past 5K mis...

Suspect any perf diffces from ECU delimiting are minor...

Unknown is whether AMG chooses more robust motors for 030s....and what is mfg variance in hp/tq of 63 motors....

IMO, most relevant advantage of 030 for ex-German AB use is that wheels are some ?20lbs lighter than non-030 wheels (in addition to looking a hell of a lot better than any wheels on planet today IMO)....in my mtn twisties driving, seems like 030 is slightly sharper in terms of chassis balance/steering....but both cars are superbly balanced.....and unknowns incl alignment settings, etc (both errors at factory/shipping/delivery...and misalignment/wheel microdeformations developing via use on imperfect public roads).....and the ever-present placebo factor....

All subtle stuff....but would argue part of why I enjoy obtaining new cars so often is to experience these dynamic nuances....and avoid mtce hassles/decay curve unknowns of any car >5K mis or so of exuberant driving.....

Manual mode....could sound better....supposedly ABC is tighter, shift speeds faster, throttle response faster....

Gave up on Manual mode, even in wkend mtn twisties driving.....Sport Auto mode seems awfully fast/smart and well-integrated vs ESP/ABS, etc etc

And find Manual mode to be poorly developed....slow downshifts; no large central tach (w/dig readout of gear chosen and speed)....suspect it's a laughable marketing trinket in era of increasingly fast/smart autoboxes, linked to various sophisticated chassis computer networks, esp in context of a 63 motor which has a better tq curve than 599's......

Haven't seen even AMG claim that test drivers (let alone mere wkend amateurs) are faster around NBR/track in Manual vs Sport Auto mode....

Ya, I have to agree that the readouts are a little weird.

But there is one screen that does show a large number for the gear selected.

Yes, the AMG screen shows gear selected....and ?temps of oil/coolant.....but no central tach...

But IMO any car's instru panel is fairly worthless in spirited driving w/o central tach....have never understood why, esp in Manual mode, central screen isn't a large tach w/easily visible dig readouts of gear selected...and speed....all other info is fairly peripheral and non-critical for driving on public roads w/speed lims/enfcmt...

The massive central, analog-like speedo is absurd....I always drive w/speedo set for dig readout of speed.....as I find it hard to quickly discern speed from the analog-like speedo....but tend to know the spots along my usual routes where closer adherence to speed lim is advisable....

agree about tach position. Only comment is that with radio off engine sound is beautiful and best indicator of rpm.

Also, in manual mode I think that car is flatter in curves.
