Photos of AMG Sport Steering wheel with Aluminum Shift Paddles on a '07 CL600...
I recently purchased a '07 CL600 with 8,600 miles from a MB dealer back East. The car had been used exclusively by the CEO of the corporation who owns the MB dealership. Several months ago, in anticipation of the possible purchase of such a vehicle, I acquired an original OEM MB black leather AMG Sport Steering wheel with aluminum shift paddles from someone who 'downgraded' his MY08 S63 and switched to a 'codgerly' wood/leather wheel with rear button shifters. This guy obviously doesn't read WSH's posts in our Forum. I found the AMG wheel right here in our Forum's classifieds at an incredible low price (approx. $300). I must admit that this wheel works best with those S or CL cars with a black dash/black carpet interiors (e.g. Black, Black/Cognac or Designo Espresso). My goal back in the Fall of '07 was to find a great deal on a used '07 S600 Designo with an Armagnac leather interior or a '07 CL600 with the optional (but rare) Cognac leather interior. I found the latter in early December and bought it. So the first thing I did yesterday to my CL600 was to install the AMG sport wheel in lieu of the wood/leather unit that came standard with the car. This was done via a local qualified MB tech and took about 1/2 hour of his labor. Quite frankly, this 'change' changes the character and tactile feeling of driving this vehicle and I strongly recommend it to those of you who have a 550, a 600 or even a 65 (S or CL) but would like the thicker, sportier feeling of the AMG steering wheel. The only negative is that you lose the heating function of the wheel, if your car came with that option (mine did). Small price to pay to gain the look and feel of a truly great steering wheel on your late model MB! And because I already had the 'exclusive grade' leather covered air bag center (with beautiful double stitches) to switch from the original CL600 wheel, my particular AMG steering wheel looks better than most of the ones found on original S63s and CL63s in our market since these come with rather tacky looking 'plastic' air bag cover.
