What type of gas are you all using?
Hey guys,
So with the obvious absurd price of gas, what type of gas are you all running? Will I get shat on here by telling you i've been putting in regular recently? I ask because i've heard of two ideas that I am not sure are true or not..
Lower grade gas lowers performance as the car is tuned for higher
&
Lower grade gas will actually decrease mpg for the same reason above.
What do you think?

What is the price differential between regular and premium in your area? Around here, it just jumped from $.20 to $.30. That's still less than a 10% differential. You will probably lose more than 10% in gas mileage. A $.30 difference results in about $6.00 on a 20 gallon fill-up. What is $6.00 on an $80.00 fill-up?
As many other posters have asked, why do you drive a Mercedes if you can't afford the $6.00 difference in gas? (Search the forums.)
Hope this helps.

In high performance applications, such as a high compression n/a car (any 63 model and basicly now all mercedes engines), and boosted apps, such as any of the 65's or 55's, the motor will detonate because of the low octane. When putting 87 oct in your car the knock sensors are probably working like crazy to try to pull timing because your car is detonating like bombs over Iraq. Detonating, or knock, or ping, is all the same thing and it happens when combustion happens before spark. Short term effects are always the bad ones. Broken rod, usually making it swing through the block, broken ring lands on the pistons. Long term effects are, burnt up valves resulting in major power loss(no compression in that cylinder), and beat to hell rod and main bearings. I could go on about how knock is a motors worst enemy but just do a search on the info i just gave you. My suggestion....dont be cheap and spend the extra $200 a year to save your car.

If you use the search function, you will find that this question has been asked ad nauseam. It makes no sense to save a couple of dollars by using regular. It can cause real problems in the long term.
