The best AMG I have ever owned...The torque is intoxicating. The luxury and comfort is awesome. I think this one is definitely a keeper.

 

It is insanity to treat automobile ownership as any type of investment. Just buy the car you can afford with the money you have already written off. I wouldn't be able to enjoy my cars if I viewed them as investments and I surely wouldn't be able to enjoy my investments if they were cars.

 

If you enjoy driving and think of it as therapeutic...then yes... it is an investment in keeping your santiy and providing a release to the stresses of the world (as I said not a financial one). Maybe you aren't having enough fun in your cars?

Many equally valid points of view on this thread. Thanks to all who are reading and posting. I for one will readily admit to the fact that "automotive expense" constitutes a FAR larger slice of my financial 'pie chart' than ANY financial advisor would ever approve. That being said, my wife and I do not have kids, neither of us really enjoys travelling, and our parents are (thankfully) physically healthy and finacially solvent, so we don't have to worry (yet) about elder care expenses. Most important, I am absolutely APE over cars. For some people, cars are solely utiitarian: as long as it starts and runs, WTF. For me (many of us, maybe?) cars are darned near a religious experience. I can spend HOURS in the garage with my Griot's orbital keeping my rides in show-ready condition. I think it really is therapeutic to have such a physical hobby that allow for such tangible beginning and end results. I don't really get much of that in my line of work. Over the years, the wife and I have owned (get ready): a 1991 M5; a 1992 850i; a 2001 CLK55; a 2002 ML55; and a 2005 E55. (Holy sh*t ... I haven't really lined 'em up like that before!!) We still have the E55 and the wife is driving an ML350 while we wait for ML63 prices to drop. I have ALWAYS wanted a TT V12 AMG car and I am not much for the S sedan. So, that leaves the SL and the CL to choose from. CL65s are CLEARLY more affordable across the board for a comparable year/mileage car as compared to SL65s. I actually prefer (slightly) the SL look, but it's tough to justify the dramatic increase in price for a car that will probably feel and perform comparably. I did NOT know that SL65 had the LSD diff and CL65 did NOT. All things being equal, I think I am going to make a move on the 05 CL65 that I have spotted. Then I'm going to call Cory at Kleemann and see if he will give me a 'Johnny Come Lately' price special on ECU/TCU upgrades. I have a Kleemann pulley and ECU flash on my E55 and I found Corey to be absolutely top-notch to deal with. I'm also going to look into a cooling upgrade, whether it's just an improved IC pump or a full 'kit' with a secondary heat exchanger like I have on my 55. I will keep everybody posted. I believe I'd take a CL65 over a SL65.

Its pure comfort and styling but will beatup on most cars as well. If you are into cabrio and don't need back seats then the SL65 would be the ticket.

O.K. everybody. It's me again. After all the informative posts to this thread, I have pretty much decided to take the plunge and trade my 05 E55 in for the 05 CL65 I found. It has under 16k miles and just came off the initial 4/50 warranty last fall before the original owner traded it in. It is a "true" no-stories one-owner car. My service advisor ran the vin and pulled up every service record on the car. It had the airmatic suspension system serviced and the pump replaced at 12k miles. Is this the "airmatic nightmare" that so many owners have commented on? Does it sound like this problem has already reared its ugly head and been resolved while still under warranty?

Question: what do you all think of owning one of these 65 AMG beasts that is off warranty? Is it just a pure "fool's errand"? God knows I would love it if this car were "certified" for an additional 2-3 years. But it isn't and an "aftermarket" warranty will probably run around $5k. Should I be concernd with a one-owner car with 15k miles and the air-matic issue already addressed? Anything else likely to go horribly wrong with this car?? Any thoughts or advice on non-MB warranties?

The CL/S/S65's have ABC suspensions which is hydraulic...not the "airmatic" usually found in the E-class. A warranty is a must that covers the ABC. $5K seems a bit high but I bought mine before the factory warranty expired so I haven't looked around lately at the pricing.

I have a cl65 for sale with 15k miles loaded .... And a year left on factory warranty

2 things I advise

1. buy one of a cars with options ..mostly keyless otherwise you are looking at a higher loss of value
2. do not own I of these cars out of warranty!!

Also a certified car is Bull**** because it only has a year after factory for the certified warranty .... Buy a car with factory then spend about $3500 on an extended warranty

Again the cl65 I am selling is the best deal on a low mileage car with warranty you can find in the country...

If the engine blows in one of these cars ... It is a $100k replacement with labor ... This is a price given directly from Mercedes service techs

It is possible to love a car without going overboard and doing an apparent C&P job everytime on these!

 

i found a dailmler crysler warr. for $1720 extended for 3yr/36mi 0 detuct, but the car i'm looking at has low miles and is still under warr. do a search for dc extended warr. or pm me and i will give you the info.

 

When you buy a CPO car it can be extended to 3 years and or 100K miles. That is the way I would go.

 

Just for reference, even if you buy a car that is still under the factory warranty, you can not extend the warranty unless you are the original owner.

 

Only an extended is a possibility with an aftermarket
And you will save 50% if the car still is in factory warranty before
Purchase!

 

I think 100k for a new engine could be a slllllllllllllllllllliggggghhhhhhhtttttttttttt

You could by a low mileage CL65 for roughly half that.

the list price of the v12 twinturbo is about 65k.

figure 20 hours in labor at $140/hour + assorted connectors/hoses/etc .. and you get about $70k...

If you par the car out yopu would get roughly around 20K+...I'd buy a new car if I have to pay that much for a new engine. I would rebuild my damaged one to be bullet proof....nto to mention swap out turbos for ones the size of a fan...
