Bentleys cl600 bi turbo

Nice car Bently, bet you dont go far between petrol stations. Ive been on various MB sites and this is by far the best. Some of the other members have some serious knowledge and our overseas gentleman take their cars very seriously in deed.
Im new to this site and still getting used to it. I dont want to thread jack the issue in hand that Oxygen was explaining, just wanted to get back to you.
Im taking my cl55 to an independant garage tomorrow to stick it on the star diagnostic machine to hopefully tell me why my abc warning light came on when i got in my car and just backed it off the drive.
I have a warranty with warranty wise and they said the first thing i have to do is get a garage to plug it into the 'star' diagnostic.
Then they will stay where im covered or not. Havent slept for two nights!!!!!!!!
Will let you know. But i have learned loads from the other members and feel far more confident about whole potential ABC issues.

Gordon,

Could be worth while checking out this offer of a pump in NYC. Don't get a used one, it's likely as knackered as the old one. Check underneath the car and see if you have an oil leak . My pump was leaking onto the undertray and running to the rear of the engine area. This would give an immediate indication of the pump leaking at least until you get the undertray off and confirm.

Bentley:

If im honest, i did see a slight oil leak towards the back of the engine on that tray, as my car parks on the drive up hill. I assumed wrongly, that it was just a bit of engine oil which had been split when it went in for its last service. (car has only done 3K in 6 mths), The garage did say i had a little oil leak but nothing major!
I did top up the resvoir last night i it took 0.7 Litre which was purchased from merc dealer yesterday. The garage which im having the star diagnostic done with said i could drive it as long as i kept an eye on the ABC dipstick. It is now full and im driving into Manchester today.
From what has been said on this great site, it is clear they should flush the system first then, look for leaking pipes / pump, before moving onto replacing the pump itself.
As for Nightflyers ABC pump, i can only wish i could afford the 2003+ supercharger model!
Maybe one day, mine is the 2001 with 71k on the clock with FSH.

ABC probs

Gordon,

If you're oil leak is evident at the front of gearbox housing/rear of engine, then I would get your specialist people to drop the undertray ( about 10 minutes) and look up at front of engine on passenger side...if there is fluid dripping from pump then it's 99% sure that the pumps knackered or that the low pressure hose coupling is leaking especially if it drips while the engine is NOT running. Not much point in them flushing the system with the oil at about £18.00 / litre .

It's always a good idea to host the pictures in a DIY thread on a free photo server such as photobucket. That way, when you have sold your car and don't care anymore people can keep learning from your thread.

Update on CL55 AMG ABC warning light coming on

Hi,

Not going well, when bought the car 6mths ago / 3k miles ago before the warranty people would cover the car they sent an engineer out. He suggested getting the ABC fluid check to ensure that it wasnt contaminated. I did go to the main dealer and they said i could do if it i wanted but it looked ok. It would cost £450. So i didnt bother. This was back in October 09. (wish i had now). As recently my ABC light came on, so I contacted my local specialist and he said make sure their is oil in the resevior and bring it in. I did need to put in 0.7Ltr as it had been drop some what. I drove to the garage and they hooked it onto the STAR diagnostic machine. It said the low pressure, however he said he thinks the pump is leaking slightly. The warranty people however have decided that as i didnt change the ABC oil my pump is not covered. The bit that gets me is the engineer suggested i get it checked. I did, and merc said it was ok. In fact on their helath sheet it said amber! The specialist that has it now says he thinks the oil was ok and therefore not the reason for the leaking pump. Warranty people youve got to love them!!!!!!!!!!
So anyone got a pump for a 2001 CL55AMG on this planet.

Kind regards Gordy Manchester, UK

Gordy,
What a bummer. Warranty people are slime...they wriggle out of every claim. I have to say that Bentley Motors always stand by theirs though...I guess it goes back to the old Henry Royce tenet that his cars never break ( although they do occasionally "fail to proceed"). Hopefully one of our kind buddies across the pond will come up with a sensibly priced ABC pump and ship it to Manchester for you. Make sure you get the filters changed and the polyVee belt and tensioner and check out the condition of the pump hoses too.

I did not sell my car, I lost my domain after a long and hard battle, details are unnecessary.

Here are the pictures, back from the grave.

A few months back a member from this board came to our shop ( TTMotorsports / https://mbworld.org/forums/members/9...torsports.html ) with a 2003 CL600 that had a serious problem with the front end sinking after being turned off for a few minutes.

The car also make a crazy crunching/cracking/dinging sound coming from the ABC pump and would not rodeo for more than a few minutes because the pump would not produce enough pressure.

Our first attempt to remedy the problem was to filter the ABC fluid but that had no effect and the car would sink to the ground after being off for about 3 minutes.

The front axle valve block was obviously malfunctioning and needs to be replaced along with the pump and the leaky high pressure expansion hose.

One of the first things you must do is suction off the hydraulic fluid in the ABC and PS tanks...

The front axle ABC valve clock hiding behind a maze of hydraulic hoses...

Front driver's side wheel well needs to be removed to provide access to the front axle valve block and the pressure accumulator...

The black bulb is the front axle pressure accumulator and it is on the same plate as the front axel valve block. The whole assembly is removed once the hydraulic hoses are disconnected from the valve block...

Here is what 7 years of improvement look like... the valve blocks are not manufactured by the same company...

Here is the new valve block assembled with the mounting plate and the pressure accumulator.

The valve block has 4 electrical connections and 5 hydraulic connections.. they are as follows:

SP: Pressure Accumulator
S: High Pressure Feed
T: Low Pressure Return
FB1: Front Left Strut
FB2 Front Right Strut

The new valve block installed and all hydraulic and electrical connections are assembled:

When I initially diagnosed the car I noticed that the high pressure expansion hose that connects to the pump was sweating a lot of hydraulic fluid on the surface and would eventually fail, causing the same failure that happened to my S600 months back. With the new pump working correctly I did not want to subject the old hose to the high pressure and it needed to be replaced.

Here's a comparison between the old and the new hoses...

Installation of the hose is a bit tricky.. the motor mount needs to be unbolted from the subframe and the motor needs to be raised a few inches since the hose runs underneath the crank pulley and the subframe...

Here is the new and the old pump. The older pumps were manufactured by LuK but they were since bought and are now manufactured by a company called Ixetic. Exterior case is exactly the same. The suction restrictor valve looks to be updated..

New pump installed and awaiting feed lines to be connected..

The rear axle made clunking sounds when the car would be engaged in gear.. I discovered that there were 2 bolts missing on the rear axle connecting to the differential. The other 4 bolts were loose or half way out....

Cleaned the rear axle, replaced the washers and the 6 bolts.. torque to correct specs...
