K&N Air filters

I looking into putting K&N Air filters onto my car. Part # 33-2181. Can anyone tell me exactly where and how to you access the air filters?

Cheers

You need to pull the plastic engine cover off. Start with the front piece, closest to the front of the car. It pulls up in the front and then slides forward and off.

Next, the large plastic cover pulls straight up and off. Turn the large cover over and there are several torx screws on both sides. Loosen all the torx screws and the cover will separate in half giving you access to the filters.

When installing the K&N, make sure to install the self adhesive gasket as well that comes with the filters.

Reinstall in reverse.

Do they make a noticeable difference in HP? Or what is the reason for putting these in? Thanks.

I had K&N's in my 2001. I really didn't notice any difference in power, however, I did notice an increase in mileage. I also feel it made the engine/exhaust a tad louder.

Will I put them in my 2003 ? I am debating it. The biggest problem with the K&N's is that sometimes the oil used to impregnate the Cotton gauze of the K&N will come off and hit the MAF sensor. When it does, the MAF will throw an error and will need replacing, which isn't cheap. I never had a problem in my 2001, however, I have read/heard about many MB owners that have had this happen.

I would suggest that when it comes time to clean and re oil the filters to be liberal on the oil. It doesn't take a lot of oil to impregnate the Cotton. Use just as much as you need to avoid any dripping off.

I very well may put the K&N's back in my 2003. I have used K&N's in almost every car I have had for the past 15 years. Never had any problems with them at all. And since they last so long (Milliona mile warranty), I just clean and re-oil them every 30,000-40,000 miles.

They will pay for themsleves after a couple normal filter changes, so what the heck. Give them a try.
