Is it true that you should only use oem battery for the car? Anyone have experiences with aftermarket ones?

I think there are a few options but if you plan to keep the car for a while, I would stay with the MB battery..

can't make up my mind, i need to drive an hour for nearest mb dealer, got a autozone 5 mins away, is it worth the hour drive for the battery?

M-B battery is just a different colored re-labelled Interstate battery..............so get whatever you want that has the same or more juice.

a quality replacement battery from AutoZone is more then adequate
