I always wonder why it would take AMG to build a V12 to keep up with a V8 Chevy? I am hoping Mercedes would come up with a V8 that could beat the Z06 with the price tag not more than double the Z06. :-)

Do you really wonder this? Okay, I will help you out...AMG takes luxury cars and makes them perform better. The Z06, as great of a sports car as it is, will never ever be a luxury car. The Z06 engineering team stripped hundreds of pounds of weight out of an already pretty light car (let's not forget regular C6 Vette's wear a lot of fiberglass).

AMG has no intention of ever making a Z06 rival. Theoretically, they could easily do this by dropping the 500+hp 6.2L V8 and 7spd MCT tranny in the SLK and put a non-retractable carbon fiber roof similar to what they did on the SLK55 BS (not for US production). Why won't they do this? Because it will upset the whole hierarchy of the range. They would have to price the car well over $100K. Then AMG would have to worry about two things, either cannibalizing SL63 sales...or trying to find people willing to buy a $100K+ SLK model. Instead, AMG is more content to go up-market with an SLS offering where they can easily justify $200K+ given the range of cars they are already selling.

I think the CL had problems. They trap 123 stock and the Z06 traps from 120-125.

It should have been a closer race.
