sl550 wheels on cl55?

Hi, will the wheels I like work for the cl55? They are MB wheels for the standard sl. I know the sl55 offsets are way off for the cl55, but will these 19x8.5 front 35mm offset, and 19x9.5 rear 40mm offset work? Anyone else have this setup?

Thanks,
Erin

I do not know what years you are quoting or MB part numbers but I would stick with AMG wheels with proper offsets or you may have trouble. Perhaps you can purchase AMG wheels that look like the SL? Your dealer should have a wheel catalog.

I am speaking from experience when I talk about trouble.
Consider putting the $ into better tires on the AMG wheels you already have.

What was your experience Grane? I believe the stock offset for the cl 55 is 44. So this set would be -4mm rear and -9mm front. Did you have a similar difference in offset or was your setup more extreme? I am only looking into these sl rims because the price point is where I would like to be for a setup I would only use in the spring/summer months.

After a bad experience that took up an inordinate amount of time, I found genuine AMG take offs with the correct offsets, etc., on one of the Forums at a very attractive price to use for my winter tires.

Are the part numbers you quote preceded or followed by a A or a B?

Remember that if you have the TPMS system that you will either have to purchase and have pressure sensors installed (A), if possible, or ensure that the sensors are there and working (B).

Please realize that as a Forum member I am here to share my experiences. I know that my seasoned MB AMG tech, as well as my independent tire/wheel shop, tells me to stick with AMG wheels only.

Consider joining the AMG Private Lounge and seeing what the factory people say about how to proceed. You'll need your VIN number to join.

BTW, what summer tires are you considering for these wheels?

PS
I hope you find that your choices are good ones and make you happy!

Thanks for your input, much appreciated. I'm not sure if those part #'s are followed or preceeded by any letters. There's a thread going in the w211 amg forum about them and they are 138 bucks a piece which is a steal. I wouldn't be able to swap the tire pressure sensors from the factory wheels? I was planning on going with the Hankook tires that have gotten some good reviews by others here..

Do you know if the cl600 you had the same offset requirements as the cl55? And what was the setup you had?

Price seems good.

Sensors are getting cheaper. I was last quoted $47/per this winter at the Tire specialist. Sensors can be broken if switched out, besides you have sum and winter wheels?

My OM says the CL600 has the same offsets as my CL. Please check yours.

I use Hankook Icebears as wt and they are super on cold roads and dreaded black ice. Since the AMG is happy when driven regularly they make it a 4 season car but snow is for the G. My tech says he likes them. The V12s are inexpensive. Supposedly they are a big hit in Germany. When my Advans wear out I shall get them.

It is nice to see someone doing their homework and hopefully getting a deal!

It is supposed to snow tomorrow.

Time to pick up my lovely for a ride and some sashimi!

Nice to know Hankook makes a good winter tire as well! I love my Michelin Pilot Sports but the way I drive will have me replacing them soon, and often So the tire pressure montors come with the tires, not the wheels??

The sensors thread into the wheels on the inside I believe where the valve stems are but I might have that wrong. Some installers use a grease that helps prevent electrolysis between the two unlike metals or the sensors come with a plastic barrier. Probably a little Teflon tape in between would do the same job. Sensors are available at good tire/wheel specialists. MB probably wants megabucks for them.

I am still leery of the front offset. Usually, if I recall correctly 10% is the recommended variation.

I believe the wheels I had trouble with were 32-35 all around. I did not want to get into the spacer thing...on an AMG. Frankly the entire experience was royal pain with the wheel manufacturer - Mandrus insisting that the wheels would fit but the suspension would bottom out, the tires would rub, a nightmare. The wheel retailer took them back and gave me full refund and ended up dropping the line I guess I was not the only unhappy customer.

If you can hang on I will call my tech tomorrow for you. Ok?

Yea I checked tire rack and the sensors seem to be reasonably priced, good to know tho. Thanks, i'll await your tech's verdict. Hope the front wheel is not a dealbreaker but you make sense as far as the 10% max variation..

I am looking up post 2002 SL wheels in the "Genuine MB accessories Wheels" catalog and I do not see these p/n or this number format.

I see numbers like B6 647 1761

This is for the 230 series SLs.

I know these sorts of numbers are "stamped" inside my AMG wheels as well as Germany and TUV if I remember correctly.

Did Mb change their numbering scheme?

They may have changed the numbering scheme as the wheels I am looking at are available on the current 2011 sl550 as an exterior accesory on the mbusa website. It is a 5 star split-spoke design.
