Gas Filler Door Problem

Anyone had a problem with this door staying down? What's the fix. If I push it closed and then lock the car remotely it stays locked but once I unlock the car it pops open. Guess I need to visit my dealer for this niggly little problem. Oh yes, license plate bulb out in rear too. Can't be perfect.

I had the same problem on my 2001 and 2003. It's a bad design. If you look at the gas cap there is a rubber thether and you will see that in certain positions where it attaches to the plastic body it binds up. The thether should be a couple inches longer.

You need to manually adjust it a bit to get it un-binded. Take a look. I'm sure you will see what I mean.

On my 2001 I actually detached the thether to stop the problem for good.

I have had the same annoying problem and must check the tether. My 02 CL did not have that problem. The only other small problem was a malfunctioning light over the passenger side vanity mirror, which was quickly fixed.
A few weeks ago I had to replace a rear tire due to a puncture, which was an expensive repair, as the only source for the Bridgestones was the dealer. It was not a sidewall puncture, but I did not feel comfortable with a repair. I gather that the tires will be released to the usual tire sources in early June, who will very likely sell them for much less than the MB dealers.

The Bridgestone RE050 are made for OEM only. I don't know if we will ever see them in the regular sector as they are only spec'd by bridgestone for the CL55 and S55 and only come in the 2 sizes.

The Bridgestone RE050 tires are far better than the Dunlop Sport's or the Michelin Pilot Sports on my 02 CL500 Sport and my wife's 03 SL500 Sport respectively. For that reason, I will stay with the Bridgesotne's even if the dealer is the only source when I have to replace the rears at 12k or so miles. (Obviously I would never mix brands front and rear r side to side.) It is encouraging that MB has put the Bridgestones on all of the 03 CL55's and CL600's that I have seen, as opposed to using Dunlops, Michelins or Conti's depending on the delivery date or some other arbitrary factor.

What did the dealer charge for the replacment ?

I'll talk to my tire guru and see if he can get Bridgeston to divert some RE050 stock.

Don't shorten it as that will make it worse. You need to adjust it at the pivot point. That is all.

Adam:
The dealer charged $379 for the RE050 rear tire (plus tax) although they did not charge me for mounting and balancing, on which they did a good job. I also had them change the oil and filter at about 1600 miles when the car was in for the tire work. i have assumed that the Mobil 1 0-W40 is the same as the factory used and that there was no special run-in formula oil. Will change oil every 3000 miles despite the factory recommendation, unless someone can provide a compelling reason not to.
BTW, I got gas yesterday and adjusted the tether before closing the cover, which then worked flawlessly, thus eliminating the only flaw in the car so far.

For some reason, the gas top still seems to come up - I just cant get it to click into place where it actually stays.

Any help is appreciated

I have had the same problem, but have learned that it is important to allow the gas cap tether not to interfere at all with the lid when it is closed. Unwind the tether if it is twisted and align it so that it lies as close to the bottom of the assembly as posible. Then I am sure that the lid will close and lock with no problem. the 2002 that I had did not have this problem. I believe that its tether was a bit longer than the 03. I suggest that you avoid the dealer, as they likely will not know about this glitch and may make things worse if they start adjusting the lid. I asked my tech early on about the problem and he had no clue.
