Clunk with Small Movement of Steering Wheel
Hey guys,
I am getting a clunk in the steering when moving it a little bit from side to side. It sounds like it may be coming from somewhere within the steering column in the interior. Is there a U joint or something in there that can be replaced? Any insight is appreciated!

does it also clunk some times when driving and the car goes over small bumps?
and yes- it feels inside the steering as it is the u-joint in the telescope. i have seen part #32 go bad / needs to be retightened where mating with the steering rack and #9/10 get loose or wear out.
a visual inspection on a lift with a stethoscope will reveal the culprit.

it might be that your steering linkage needs to be tightened.
there is a procedure for that- ask your dealer.
if tightness is within specs- your steering rack might be on its way out although to be honest i have not seen this on the w215 .
what i am thinking is happening is that you have a bad bushing somewhere that is the source of the freeplay. slightly reduce weight on the front (jack a bit) and try again- is the freeplay gone? if it is- it is a bushing.

you probably had the same issue I did when I bought the car. The steering wheel would make clunk sounds when I wiggled it left and right. Brought it to get fixed and the technician found something loose and tightened it....
wish I could help more LOL
