How long did your coilpacks last after ECU/TCU tune?

I'm thinking of getting a ECU/TCU tune on the CL65. I have 70000miles on it with the stock coilpacks. I was wondering how long your packs lasted after getting your tune on your car? I prefer the answer in miles and not time as some of us don't drive our cars everyday. Any feedback would be great.

I would say its hard to quantify. They will more then likely go depending on how you drive not how far. If its a hotter out they may go sooner. I remember having issues with mine after some spirited driving in 90 degree weather. I think it helped fry the older ones. Now I don't bother in that type of weather, its just too much heat and no place to go. It doesn't make sense to get a tune and not enjoy the added power, Just plan on it as part of the upgrade so you aren't caught off guard with the cost.

Less then 200 miles after I got the ecu/tcu tune..
Had the older part# coil packs. Put the new ones in with new part#'s and it's been a champ.

Surprised that the tuner didn't suggest it in the first place since I would not recommend running a ecu/tcu tune if you have the old partno coil packs.

I checked the VMI on the car and there is no indication of any coil pack being replaced. I guess I have to search for the new part number for the coils and compare that to what's installed in the car. When did the coil pack part number change?

I think circa 2006. My 2005 Cl65 had one replaced under warranty on the Driver's side coil pack rail with a new part# one (removing the old partno one).

When I got the ecu/tune, the Passenger side (old Part No) was the one that went bad after WOT driving in about 200miles, so I replaced it myself with the new part no coil pack.. and it's been solid since, no CEL lights yet.. Classic symptoms are misfilres and CEL codes PO300's. when you gun it. then it finally shutdown after clearing it a few times.. total one side coil pack failure and puts you in limp mode.. amazing it still drives with one side coil pack shutdown.. but you get alot of unburnt gas and soot.. you'll need to run mystery oil and/or techron, seafoam cleaner to clean it out..

With a flash light, you can spot the partno's on the coil packs..

Old ones:
A275 150 04 80 For the R/H side and A275 150 05 80 for the L/H.

New ones:
A275 150 06 80 for the right and A275 150 07 80 for the left.

I saw only old coil packs on auction sites, so buyer beware.. get the new ones.. Parts.com

I just confirmed I have original 70000mile coils installed on my car. I don't think I want to spend $4000 right now modding the car.

The added boost of the turbos and the fuel requires more spark energy to ignite there for if the coil pack are weak, they will burn out.

Yeah I didnt want to beleive that they would fail after a tune but it was like clock work. One after 100 miles then the other after 300 miles. Oriellys sells an Import Direct brand and its the actual OEM part with a LIFETIME WARRANTY! I told them dealer would sell them for 800 and they price matched it.

I am replacing mine today, about 2 months after be tuned. Passenger side blew on the way to the track... Gonna do both sides now. Plugs won't be here, so I'll run the old ones for now. Only an hour or so job to do all of this, if I have to get back in there.

Worn plugs are a big reason why the coil packs arc out. Higher resistance from a bigger gap causes it.

Yeah, I know that, thanks. That's why I ordered plugs at the same time as the 2 new coils. Unfortunately being cheap is gonna cost me some time, as the place I bought them seems to be very unresponsive...deal..meh...Now I'm not even sure which coil packs I am gonna get... old ones or new ones... I've heard you can't run old with the new...this bites...find out when Fedex gets here...

At 70k Miles I'd say your almost at that time for those coils to go out, I've heard depending on how hard you drive it, you can be looking at a range of 40-100k I'm at 55k right now but I have warranty until 87k, but I'm gonna try riding my car hard and have them blow out while its under warranty.

Just wish coils were like my cats. My custom exhaust doesn't go in until first week of Dec. but my cats are starting to clog up. Sl65 cats, $5200 not including labor lol. While it is under the 8 yr/80k fed. warranty my indie shop says the dealership would make me run thru hoops such as changing the injectors, sensors etc. Just gotta deal with it for about a month I guess, but I'm sick of how my turbos aren't getting the air for the boost they need lol.

What makes you think your cats are starting to clog? If they are, in fact, clogged, the dealership will replace them without much of an issue.
