start to smell fuel when car idles for to long, inside and outside. cls55
exhaust - run a can or two of chevron techron. if that does not fix it- it could be many things - leaky injectors is usually the culprit
outside rear - gas tank/ cap/ lines/ fuel filter might be leaking. have the car on a lift and use your nose.
engine compartment - fuel rail/ hoses., remove engine cover and use your nose.
good luck

You can also get some valuable information on an NHTSA campaign for leaking fuel sending units on the 211 E55's. Not sure if this is your problem but see if it meets the symptoms others are having. https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...all-bombs.html
